SINGAPORE: A taxi driver was sentenced to eight weeks' jail on Tuesday for punching two elderly cyclists. The incident occurred in May last year.

The court heard that 60-year-old Tan Chye Tiong had parked his taxi on the double yellow line of the driveway in front of a ramp at an HDB block.

Tan was taking a smoke break after dropping off two passengers.

Chua Ah Ye, 61, Seow Cheng Khue, 75, and a friend were cycling home from a coffee shop at Chai Chee after celebrating Mother's Day that night.

The three had wanted to access a pavement from the ramp, but Tan's parked taxi blocked their way.

Madam Chua approached Tan and asked him to move his taxi, but Tan refused.

The two argued, and Tan punched Madam Chua in the face, causing her to fall.

Mr Seow then scolded Tan for hurting Madam Chua.

In response, Tan punched Mr Seow in the face too.

The assault left Madam Chua with a bruised eye, swelling on her head, and a swollen finger.

Mr Seow suffered swelling on his eye and abrasions on his elbow.

The court granted Tan two weeks for him to settle his personal matters.

Tan is currently on an S$8,000 bail, and will start serving his term on August 19.

He could have been jailed up to two years and fined S$5,000. - CNA/xq

After 8 weeks jail can he still drive taxi?:D

Wow, this must be a new low. Punching two elderly people in the face because he didn't want to move his car a few meters. I hope he is lined up for IMH admission after he completes his jail term.
