PAP did the right thing to ban 星国恋!
星国恋
Why ban?
Some argued what's the worry, since communism is so old fashion.
I say, they ban not because of the communism content, but because it shows the suppressive side of the government then. And the government's side of story is not included in the film. Who would remember it was a condition by Malaya PM and British to nab all those leftists before agreeing to a merger of Malaysia?
Some say let Singaporeans judge and decide.
I say that is only if the film truly and honestly depicts the history, so that people can watch, judge and decide. But we know films are never 100% balanced, especially such politically-motivated film - they will have an agenda, angle, perspective, etc.
Some say let the MDA produces another film to counter it.
I say, not wise to spend taxpayers' money in this way. And who will really watch a film produced by government (if it is even allowed in the first place)?
Some say with internet, it will be available in anyway, and banning it will give it free publicity.
I say, then good for them. So banning is not all that bad. Of course box office receipts will be lost and film makers would have to consider that in future.
Some say where's the freedom of speech.
I say, we are never shy to admit that there is always a delimiter. You allow this film to go on air, more films of controversial themes will be made. Film makers will test the limit further. And each time you ban, the art group will make it a big issue, with press statement, petition, HLP protests, etc. A bit by a bit these will further divide the nation.
Just my view. No need to whack me.
