SINGAPORE: Singapore presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian has pledged to be a President who would make life better for Singaporeans, if he is voted into office.
Speaking at a rally at Yio Chu Kang Stadium, he repeated his call to form a President's Personal Council to help him keep in touch with the people, hear their concerns and work with the government to find solutions.
15 speakers took to the stage at Mr Tan Kin Lian's rally. They included opposition party members, former media company CEOs and a former president of the national netball team.
Mr Tan made his speeches in Singapore's four official languages.
From the onset, he sought to set himself apart from the other three presidential candidates. He spoke of his financial experience managing NTUC Income and his international exposure, having served on the board of a large international organisation for more than 15 years.
He said that having never contested in any general election, he is "neutral and non-partisan" and therefore, would be able to independently carry out the duties of the President.
He spoke about how he never shied from helping Singaporeans in need.
He said: "During the global financial crisis in 2008, more than 10,000 people lost their life savings in the minibonds crisis. I spoke out for them. In the future, when you have another major crisis, I will speak out for you as your President."
Mr Tan said he is standing for election as a public duty and outlined areas that he would champion if elected as President.
They include - giving better recognition to national servicemen, helping the elderly and sandwiched class, and making homes more affordable for first time buyers.
He also had this message for young Singaporeans.
Mr Tan said: "To the young people of Singapore, there is hope for a better future. You have studied hard and are prepared to work hard. You want to get a suitable job that pays well, sufficient to meet the cost of living, to raise a family, to pay for a flat and save for retirement.
"This is possible if you have the right leaders. The leaders who take care of the people. The leaders who is willing to speak out for the people. The voice of the people."
Thursday marks the last day of campaigning, where candidates will make a last ditch attempt to reach out to voters.
