Taiwan to welcome Dalai Lama

TAIPEI, Taiwan – Taiwan's president risked angering China with his surprise announcement Thursday that he has agreed to let the Dalai Lama visit the island to comfort survivors of a devastating typhoon.

President Ma Ying-jeou's move was unexpected because he has made a priority of seeking better relations with China, and just last December nixed plans for a visit by the Buddhist spiritual leader in what was deemed a move to placate Beijing.

But his government has come under fire over its slow response to Typhoon Morakot, which claimed 670 lives when it hit Aug. 8-9, and opposition politicians in the storm zone pointedly invited the Tibetan spiritual leader to the island to console survivors.

The invitation put Ma into a bind — either risk angering China, or give further ammunition to the opposition, which accuses him of hewing Beijing's line. On Thursday, Ma gave his answer while visiting a school in Nantou County that was destroyed in mudslides triggered by the storm.

"The Dalai Lama could come to Taiwan to help rest the souls of the dead and also pray for the well-being of the survivors," he said.

There was no immediate comment from either China's Taiwan Affairs Office or Foreign Ministry.

Beijing considers the Dalai Lama a "splittist" for promoting autonomy in the Chinese region of Tibet, and opposes visits to foreign countries that raise his profile. Allowing him to visit Taiwan could undermine the rapidly improving relations between Beijing and Taipei, longtime rivals which are developing close business ties after decades of enmity.

China claims self-governing Taiwan as part of its territory, though they split amid civil war in 1949.

On Wednesday, leaders of seven municipalities hit by Morakot issued a joint statement inviting the Dalai Lama to visit storm victims from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4. The invitation from the leaders — all from the opposition Democratic Progressive Party — came as Ma faced criticism that he botched the government's response to the island's deadliest storm in 50 years.

The Dalai Lama — who has made three visits to the island over the past 12 years — has accepted the invitation "in principle," his spokesman Tenzin Takhla said Wednesday from Dharmsala, India, home to the Tibetan government-in-exile.

Since becoming president 15 months ago, Ma has reversed many of his predecessor's anti-China policies, tightening economic links across the 100-mile (160-kilometer) -wide Taiwan Strait and even speaking of a peace treaty with Beijing.

Interesting development. Issue is that there has been lots of deaths due to the typhoon so Dalai Lama is indeed on a humanitarian type trip. There to offer solace. So there is an angle to that. It is not a case of Dalai Lama being invited by Taiwan University for commencement speech.

Pretty sure that Ma got feedback from Beijing and go ahead for Dalai Lama trip. Beijing will give its typical response but lets see if there is more bite to it than just talk. If we see economic sanctions, etc etc then taiwan did ignore China as per your title. But if there is no sanctions but just talk (maybe cancel a few conferences) then Taiwan got the nod.

In fact Taiwan has been winding down its military and according to this article is thinking of cutting their troops on the islands facing China! http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking+News/Asia/Story/STIStory_385291.html

After all Taiwan does not need any troops because they are in effect protected by China.

Meanwhile the Chinese military has turned it focus away from Taiwan and is busy setting up huge Navy bases in Sri Lanka (which by the way is extremely strategic given its proximity to US Diego Garcia) and Burma. The very reason Sri Lanka could finally crush the terrorist Tamil Tigers was because China stepped up to the plate and gave them 1.4B in aid and military advice, supplies, which included military jets. In short the focus is less on Taiwan but more of increasing its military reach within the region.

I read a recent report that Beijing commie criminals told the 14th Dalai Lama to reincarnate back to China after his death so that they could find, recognise and enthrone him as 15th Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama had reportedly rejected the Commie Criminal's offer.

Obviously with all the pollution and food poisoning, China does not appear to be a good place for rebirth.

These are the new signs of the times.
The capability or ability of China or for that matter any big nation to intimidate and threaten a smaller nation ( economically or otherwise ) is coming to an end and the era to stand up and challenge is the new attitude of small nations.

Thats what this is all about.

Haha? That's what this is all about? Really? So how about "to stand up and challenge" the demands and influence of the United States? Give it a try.

As a man of religion, the Dalai Lama should just simply pray for the departed souls and not try to make political capital out of this visit to Taiwan. As far as I'm concerned, President Ma is no fool! He knows that his foes are watching his every move. He's merely taking a calculated risk. China cannot do much other than to register an official complaint. The stakes are too high! By far, President Ma is the best Taiwanese president ever. It's unfair to make him the scapegoat for Typhoon Morakot in what is essentially an Act of God or Mother Nature! To his credit, he had accepted that the buck stopped with him. What about Sinkapore where our top leaders are basically unsinkable and always not to be faulted? Here, they blame everyone and everything except themselves.:rolleyes:

With regards to the disaster, Dalai Lama and DPP who invited him, are not interested in religious harmony too.

Dalai has never been a non-political figure....he once shouted long live chairman Mao, and had inked a resolution that Tibet shall remain as for the 600 years under the central rule of Beijing,,,soon after that he collaborated with the CIA and send 2 of his own brother and few hundreds loyalist to the state for military training ,,and escape to India just before he stage an armed uprising with the CIA..ythese were historical facts openly confessed by ex-CIA agents involved in the uprising........
By any standard ,with that background ,Dalai HAS NEVER BEEN a pure spiritual leaders.......he is a separatist..
MA is very weak politically in taiwan due to the utmost incompetence of his government..and MA now yield to pressure from the opposition camp to let Dalai come to Taiwan and stir shits with Beijing ..so as to sabotage Beijing favorable support of this very weak MA..who is also an obedient follower of the US....
It is very likely that Mainland will pick another candidate and ursurp ma ..so that he will be forced out during the next election...
