Taipei, Sept. 7 (CNA) Taiwan was one of the 17 countries or territories that had requested for data on Yahoo users in the first half of this year, according to the Yahoo! Inc. global transparency report released Friday.
Yahoo received some 29,000 government requests for data on its users in the first six months of 2013, the report said, adding that about 43 percent of those requests came from the United States.
In addition to the U.S., Yahoo listed requests from 16 other countries or territories, including Australia, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Britain, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.
The Yahoo report followed the release of similar information from other technology firms, including Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Twitter.
Taiwan's requests for Yahoo users data were mainly for criminal investigation purposes, especially for investigating online purchase frauds, the Criminal Investigation Bureau said Saturday.
The bureau stressed that none of those data would be used for purposes other than criminal investigations.
