TAIPEI : Taiwan said sales of flat panels to China are expected to rise 56 per cent this year compared with last year, as the mainland economy picks up after the global crisis.

Chinese buyers have so far signed contracts worth 5.3 billion US dollars for 2010, compared with actual purchases of 3.4 billion dollars in 2009, said a spokesman from the semi-official Taiwan External Trade Development Council.

In March, Taiwan's exports to China and Hong Kong totalled 10.3 billion dollars, hitting a monthly record high, on the back of a robust increase in electronic product shipments, according to finance ministry figures.

Taiwan's relations with China have improved significantly after Ma Ying-jeou of the China friendly Kuomintang defeated pro-independence Democratic Progress Party in the election and took office in May 2008.
