Syabu worth RM5mil seized from abandoned fishing boat in Kedah
ALOR SETAR: The Kedah Customs Department made its biggest seizure of drugs this year from a fishing boat near the Kuala Kedah passenger jetty.
They seized syabu weighing 26.2kg worth about RM5mil following a tip-off from the public.
State Customs director Datuk Abd Aziz Abd Latif said the seizure was made by the Langkawi marine unit at about 3.30am last Friday.
He said the 25 slabs of syabu were found inside an empty boat not far from the jetty.
“When our team boarded the vessel, we found the engine was still running but no one was in it. The ‘tekong’ of the boat must have jumped into the river.
“The syabu was found in a secret compartment under a plastic fish box,” Abd Aziz said at a press conference here yesterday.
It is now tracing the owner of the Kedah-registered vessel with the help of the Fisheries Department.
“We believe the syabu was brought in from a neighbouring country,” he said.
