Taipei, Oct. 1 (CNA) Taipei Customs has seized what it believes are chemical compounds used in the making of bombs, including TNT, at Taoyuan International Airport, the agency said Tuesday.
Customs officials and aviation police intercepted some 20 kilograms of materials suspected to be TNT and nitroglycerine on Monday in a package sent from Hong Kong and labeled as containing "lamps and lighting equipment."
The Criminal Investigation Bureau has been brought in to confirm the make-up of the items.
A man identified as the package recipient says the chemicals pose no threat, however.
The man, surnamed Su, has told aviation police that the powders are harmless and are intended for use as special effects in a TV production.
Despite his testimony, an investigation into the compounds will continue, police said.
