More hawker centres, coffeeshops join anti-inflation drive

SINGAPORE : Prices at almost all hawker stalls in Radin Mas will be maintained for six months.
That is the pledge from some 320 stallholders in the area.
Two stalls are not joining the initiative. These stalls, which serve Western food, envisage fluctuations in prices for their ingredients, which they said make it hard for them to join in.
Radin Mas is the latest constituency to join the Retail Price Watch Group's (RPWG) anti-inflation drive.
Stallholders said they also want to keep portions the same because they serve mostly the lower-income group.
The Retail Price Watch Group is optimistic that inflation will come down from a current high of five per cent in the second half of the year.
Lee Yi Shyan, chairman of the Retail Price Watch Group, who is also Minister of State for Trade and Industry, said: "If they have achieved the purpose of conveying confidence and assurance, they may not need to extend this exercise.
But at that time, however, if they think that they can come up with a new promotional pricing, why not? They can do a second round."
