oh sorry, I didn't get that. It's 2:30 am in the morning, have had a few vodka shots! Fuck! That reminds me, I have totally forgotten to buy lemons to make limoncello. This virus and the shitstorm it has created have really messed me up.He is referring to Amy Khor the MP
You and your wife did very well without a maid. I respect that. That certainly made the transition to life in Canada much easier. To be self sufficient and self reliant.
My wife and I quarreled over having a maid too. The best compromise was when we had part-time maids. They come in, do their thing and get the hell out. But eventually it became live-in maids unfortunately, my wife and our kids got it their way. They snookered me! But I just let it be, since I want peace in the household. The irony of it is all our maids (present and past ones) always prefer me to everyone else in the house. I rarely ever ask them to do anything! And I treat them and respect them as human beings. Being far away from home is not easy, and needing to come here to work so they can send back money is admirable and a courageous thing to do for any young girl in their early 20s.

To my mind, these type of cleaning services are pretty much all we need. Come in once a week, clean, wash etc, then go! And it is good to know everyone in your family is able to chip in with house chores, until you can get cleaning service again.Yes it is tough on them. NS boys already complain book in. These ladies working as maids are very brave.
We had a cleaning service come once a week to clean our house here in Calgary. This was after I was making good money as a doctor. $150 per cleaning session usually 2hrs 2 person cleaning team.
Now with covid19 the cleaning company themselves told us they will no longer provide the service. That was 3 weeks ago.
So we have been doing cleaning ourselves. Kids clean their own rooms. Wife does the floors and toilets.
I keep the basement clean. It is where I work now.
Hardly anybody has a live in maid in Calgary. So it is not essential in people's minds.

Sinkies and hongkies are "lucky" we have 3rd world neighbours who can supply their citizens cheaply. Because of this, like you mentioned, maids are essential in most people's minds. I have a close relative whose maid was supposed to return to Indonesia about a month ago. She has worked for them for 8 years. And they resolved to not have another maid. I have not met them since, I hope they are holding out well. And their children too.
sinkies want their maids to pau kar liao. otherwise, sinkies have to drive car to carwash, hire window cleaners, do own laundry, engage dog walkers, pay for babysitting, book house cleaners, hire part time cooks, arrange for elderly assistants, etc. one maid can do all these chores for less. sinkies who hire maids are calculative, petty, and stingy. these are traits honed for generations by being descendants of coolies and peasants. trafficking and taking advantage of another less fortunate human being have been instilled in the dna.Actually all that money spent on maids can be a whole domestic cleaning service industry for local Singaporeans.
However I often hear the reasons against this is
1) Singaporeans dont want to be cleaners
2) It is so expensive @$30/hr for each cleaner to clean your house. if 2 cleaners go to the house and clean in 1 hour that would be $60 per week. ie $240 a month. Cheaper than maid. But then dont have cooking, ironing, laundry, child care, elder care, car wash.

Yes, that's true that most sinkies don't want to be cleaners. The part-time helper I hired those days were local ladies in their 50s. I can't really remember how much I paid. Probably $15 an hour for four hours I think. They did ironing too, so we made sure our clothes are washed and ready for her to iron. I am sure it'll cost more now. But generally still cheaper than hiring a live-in maid. And we have more privacy without a stranger in the house 24/7.Actually all that money spent on maids can be a whole domestic cleaning service industry for local Singaporeans.

The real message is sinkies cannot cook their own food and HAVE to rely on hawkers
Can use these, very useful.

Wow zhihau I take my hat off to you!I can cook and been fixing complete meals for my family since the age of 11 or 12.
From ayam masak merah to pongteh, from chicken curry to mutton rendang, from fried eggs to fried prawn mee or KL hokkien noodles. From broiling to roasting, my kitchen and I would be ready for it.
While whipping up dishes from scratch isn’t a problem for me, only problem is I haven’t been hoarding or buying food ingredients much, with my current supplies, I can hold out a week at most.
