Bill Gates has offered to adopt an entire village in India.

The Microsoft chief has said he will personally adopt a village in Bihar while he is visiting the state this week.

He said he wanted to adopt Gularia village to help improve socio-economic conditions and provide basic amenities, such as running water, electricity, schools and health centres.

The philanthropist is currently in India accompanied by the officials of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gates is also scheduled to meet Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in the state capital to discuss development issues and changes taking place for the poor.

With Rahul Gandhi as his guide, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, one of the world's richest men and a noted philanthropist, toured Rae Bareli and Amethi ( India) on Tuesday for a closer look at social development in the Gandhi bastions.

Gates and Rahul Gandhi flew in a chartered aircraft from New Delhi and landed at Rae Bareli's Indira Gandhi Flying Academy, located in Fursatganj town. They then drove to Bahadurpur village in Jais town and addressed a meeting of Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojna, a self-help group of women.

They later visited the Shahgarh Block Primary School where an eye care and cataract camp has been set up.

Playing every bit a charmed guest amidst soaring temperatures, Gates explained the importance of computer education and promised to try his best to develop Amethi and adjoining Rae Bareli as an IT hub.

More than 100 police personnel were deployed to provide security cover, while Gandhi and Gates also had their own personal guards to maintain the security ring around them. (PTI Image)

What about the India gov itself. What the heck is it doing. The main role of a Gov is improve the living standards of its population. Better medical care, end hunder, clean water, sewerage treament, good schools, electrification.

The country has a lot of potential but it must come with pragmatism, how to feed the large pop, control the pop (cureent growth rate is not sustainable not to mention it destroys the env), open up its economy (hard for foreign companies to set up business in india), attract more invesments with will bring in jobs for the poor.

Right now, all the brightest leave for 1st world countries and few will return because the conditions in India lead them not to. Caste system (in the US they are valued for skills not what caste they great great great grandfather is). Poor living conditions - out of your new mercedes, in your Prada shoes and right onto cow pat.

You cannot wave it off with "we are largest democracy". If indeed voting counts these folks from Bihar would have kicked out the politicians long time ago.

Just look at real democracy at play in US and UK. Voters are kicking out politicians just after 3 bad years of economy.

And you mean India itself cannot come out with US$1B to eradicate a common disease? What type of nonsense is this. You mean prior to Mr Gates's visit, kids are maimed for life just because their own gov is unwilling to spend the peanut $ to help them.

It is always good to know people like the Gates have this special calling to share their wealth with the less priviledge.
