A former banker, Briton James Daniel Rhodes, 37, was sentenced by the court today (21 Nov) to 18 months’ jail for attacking three men during a Halloween party on 23 October 2010, 3 years ago.

District Judge Eddy Tham convicted Rhodes after an 8-day trial.

The court heard that Rhodes was invited to a Halloween house party at the Spinnaker condominium near Newton.
It was there that he got into an argument with Australian-Chinese Ronald Tan, 34. He was then asked to leave the party.

As one of the hosts, Guy Anderson Steward, escorted Rhodes out of the premise, both got into a fight inside the lift.
This charge was stood down.

As Rhodes was bleeding, he was allowed back to the house to clean himself up. Then, he was escorted out by another host, Kevin Michael Hubbard, 31.

As Rhodes was being ushered out, he punched Hubbard in the back of his head. He then turned to Tan and repeatedly punched Tan. Tan fractured his skull and died 14 months later, according to a ST report.
In mitigation, Rhodes’ lawyer argued that his client had “felt threatened at the party” and had “reacted in fear of his life”.

During sentencing, the judge pointed out that the attack caused a host of physical and psychological problems to the victims. He said the sentence must therefore reflect the gravity of the offences.

The judge also ordered Rhodes to pay a compensation of $32,000 to Tan’s mother. This is for medical expenses, loss of her son’s income and transport expenses.

He could have been jailed for up to 10 years and fined or caned.

[TD] Financial hardship cannot be an excuse to commit crime, said District Judge Eddy Tham on Monday when sentencing Ricky Foo Kee Kiong, 31, to five months in jail and a $30,000 fine.

The 31-year-old had pleaded guilty to obstructing the course of justice by acting as a lookout for a Geylang vice syndicate, living on the earnings of prostitution, and assisting a loan shark.

His lawyer in his defence said that his client was "trapped in poverty" and had to pay his mother's medial bills.

How come same judge can punish a lookout so harsh but a killer so lenient?

[TD] I'm appalled by yet another case of seemingly lenient sentence on high flying FT. One eye witness said that when Tan fell back and fractured his skull, it sounded like a watermelon bursting. The fact that Tan is another FT is irrelevant, the violence and brutality is clear. Many had received much harsher punishments for far lesser crimes. Caning is certainly warranted in such a case.
