in the u.s. military, the "chief" (chief master sergeant) is treated like a general in the noncom ranks. they have privileges like officers do.

in the u.s. navy, chief warrant officers grade 2 (cwo2 to cwo5) are regarded as commissioned officers. there is no warrant officer (wo) and chief warrant officer (cwo or cwo1) after 1975.
