Last Friday two ethnic Chinese Buddhists, Alem bin Suhadi, 57, and Amel bin Akim, 60, have been whipped in front of dozens of local officials and residents in Aceh, northern Sumatra. The two Buddhists, who were charged for illegal cockfighting, chose to be punished under the local sharia law to avoid being sentenced with a jail term under the national law of Indonesia. “When they were arrested, two chickens and Rp 400,000 of betting money were confiscated by the police,” said prosecutor Rivandi Aziz. The Aceh province in northern Sumatra is the only place in the republic where sharia law is practiced.

Since Aceh has been granted autonomy in 2001 to calm down conflicts with Islamist separatists, the province strictly implemented sharia law and often made negative international headlines for caning women. Due to an amendment of the law in 2015, Non-Muslims who break Islamic laws can now also be charged under sharia law. So while Muslims have to live under the strict sharia law in Aceh, non-Muslims currently have the choice between being punished according to either the local sharia law in Aceh or the national law of the republic of Indonesia. By choosing sharia law over the national law, the two men had the opportunity to replace their jail term with caning. “We live in Aceh, so we have to obey the regulation in our region,” Alem told AFP. -mD

Caning under Islamic Law is nothing like the brutal lashing carried out in Malaysian and Singaporean prisons; Sharia caning is meant to shame more than it is to injure.

Actually the two ethnic Chinese men are smart. If they opted for the secular law, they would have to spend a considerable time in prison. The Muslim religious lashing as they know is nothing sort of the British colonial style rotan that might render the victim so painful that will make them faint and unconscious. It is more of an attempt to shame and embarrassed them for their wrongs instead of actually inflicting pain and injury which can also be seen by the thick coat the two guys wore.

What is more significant on this is that the imposition of strict Islamic law in the region has many worried about the tide of rising religious extremism. The very public caning on the two men, even without actually inflicting pain or injury is already enough to point to the real threat of religion imposing its rules on others.
