Two people were injured when a barge carrying a New Year fireworks display caught fire at an Australian beach.

A few minutes into the show at Terrigal Beach in New South Wales, an apparent malfunction caused fireworks to go off at random, some towards the beach.

Thousands of people on the beach had to be moved to safety and police sealed off the area.

Two pyrotechnicians jumped off the boat to get ashore and were later treated by paramedics for minor injuries.

Local media quoted witnesses describing how the family-friendly fireworks show at 21:00 quickly turned to chaos.

Loud explosions came from the barge as fireworks started going off simultaneously.

"It was an absolute chaos," Anooshe Mushtaq described the scene on Twitter.

"The boat shooting the fireworks goes on fire and started shootings randomly. Lucky I escaped as soon as I saw the boat on fire."

Emergency services were called to the scene and police said the crowds - about 5-6,000 people - were removed from the beach as a precaution.

The event organisers, It's Time for Terrigal, said on Facebook that they believed a canister had exploded, setting off "multiple detonations".

What should have been a 12-minute display was "pushed into 4 and a half," they said.

"It became apparent this wasn't a directed event, as there [were] random fireworks going off, at this time it was deemed unsafe and we evacuated the area."

But overall, the event "went pretty well", they said.

The incident is being investigated by work safety authorities.

A spectacular fireworks display off an Australian beach New Year’s Eve turned from thrills to horror when a fireworks barge exploded in flames.

Two technicians on the barge dove into the water amid the shuddering eruption five minutes into the fireworks display off Terrigal Beach about 40 miles north of Sydney. They suffered only minor injuries and were treated on the scene by paramedics.

Thousands of people watching on the beach were evacuated, the Newcastle Herald reported.

“The fireworks were going off as you’d expect and then suddenly there was a hell of an explosion. Next thing the barge was on fire,” a Terrigal resident told The Sydney Morning Herald.

Many spectators were initially unsure about what had happened. After the explosion, all of the fireworks suddenly erupted uncontrollably, even shooting into the crowd, as the barge burned. Some spectators laughed and cheered while others, realizing what had happened, screamed and ran.It was the first time the fireworks display was resurrected after years with no show. It was organized by the owner of the Terrigal Surf Club who fundraised money to put on the display and spent much of the year getting the proper permits and insurance, the Herald reported.

Thousands of New Year’s Eve revellers were last night evacuated from a beach on the NSW Central Coast after a barge packed with fireworks caught fire.

Crowds of people gathered on Terrigal beach just before the 9pm fireworks display and began cheering and filming when the first of the fireworks show commenced.

Two pyrotechnicians were forced to jump overboard to escape the disastrous fireworks display.

The barge, carrying significant amounts of fireworks about 50m offshore, caught fire about four minutes into the 9.30pm scheduled display on Terrigal beach, on the NSW Central Coast.

Fire Rescue NSW Superintendent Norman Buckley said the technicians operating the display jumped overboard before they were rescued by passers-by.

“A few of the fireworks caught on fire which extended to the barge itself,” Superintendent Buckley said.

“We have four trucks and a senior officer down there providing assistance”.

A NSW Ambulance Service spokeswoman told The Australian the two technicians were treated for minor burns and minor exposure, sustained in the water.

Emergency crews, including the Marine Rescue, Rural Fire Service, Police and Ambulance, are all on scene as the fire continues to smoulder.

The Environmental Protection Agency was also contacted to monitor any spillages of hazardous material from the burning barge into the water.

Superintendent Buckley said an exclusion zone will be set up on the beach if windy conditions push the barge any closer to shore.

Jess Winley tweeted video footage from the moment the showcase descended into chaos.

“Everyone started screaming and running while evacuating after this. damn terrigal fireworks,” Ms Winley said.

Another witness, Mitch Beaumont tweeted that he hoped “everyone on-board is OK”.
