Even if marathon ok china still lagging way behind in distant 3rd. No way to remotely challenge the leaders.
Maybe eventually china will catch up and even win....but for now no need to celebrate yet or make victory speech.

Honestly who are you to dictate who can or cannot celebrate? Any country would have acted the same way. Let's say canada had a space program i am sure they would be happy about it. Following your logic only the richest and most successful men are allowed to be happy and celebrate. A prisoner that is released from prison cannot be happy. A guy that bought his first car cannot be happy after all so many people own cars. A person earning his first million cannot be happy cos after all so many people have millions and billions.

Then again we know your double standards. If canada had a space program and went to the moon perfectly fine for them to be happy. China does it nope cannot and they are boasting but other countries are allowed to do it.

I am curious though why do you think your opinion is somehow worth like what millions of dollars? Like you say china is not allowed to behave like that like somehow your opinion is so big?

True... It is still too early to tell and the benefits of moon exploration to mankind is questionable.

I just find it strange everyone is slamming China's space effort when even the US and Russia have had high profile malfunctions. I guess the world is not ready to acknowledge China has attained the superpower country status.

It's this sickening nonsense that really infuriates people. Like they always give double standards like when china accomplishes something it's always no good USA does it it's good. No denying china has come a long way in a short time....all signs point to them overtaking the big 2 sooner or later. But likely later than sooner and as of now they are still lagging behind. When they catch up and overtake the big 2 then there is all the time to celebrate, brag and rub it in....

Take the example of Japan and S.Korea....Japan had always led Korea in most things...but in some areas the Koreans already caught up and even surpassed the japs. But you dun see Koreans howlian machiam the chinks (who not even there yet).

US talk shows have seized upon the stories released by Xinhua that update the public on the malfunctioning lunar rover.

The "dispatches" are written in the first person, and are intended to appear as if the Jade Rabbit writes them. The result suggests a plucky adventurer, mulling over life and death, but ready to make the ultimate sacrifice for "humanity".

The pathos proved too much for some TV comics to resist. On Tuesday, Jon Stewart's The Daily Show ran a "live" segment of the rover delivering its message, with British actor Patrick Stewart playing the part of the Jade Rabbit.

"My masters found I have a mechanical control abnormality. Some of my body parts will not obey their commands," the 73-year-old stage legend said, his voice a mix of sadness and stoicism. "The sun has fallen and the temperature is dropping so quickly," he continued, voice breaking. "To tell you all a secret, I don't feel that sad. I was just in my own adventure story - and like every hero, I encountered a small problem.

Good night, Earth. Good night, humanity," Stewart said, to applause and laughter from the studio audience.

China's first successful landing on the lunar surface became a moment of national pride last December. But the six-wheeled rover reported a problem late last month, just before the moon entered a two-week lunar night when temperatures drop to minus 180 degrees Celsius.

The rover would have frozen if it was unable to close its solar panels in time.

In the diary, the rover said it hoped people would console the Chang'e-3 spacecraft that took it to the moon.

"If I really cannot be fixed, when the time comes, I hope everyone will remember to help me comfort her."

You might have heard the news that China landed a rover on the moon. Unfortunately, their lunar rover, named Jade Rabbit, has a technical malfunction, and is facing imminent death. Well, actor Patrick Stewart, of Star Trek fame, dressed up as the rover and bid Earth farewell in a short clip on Jon Stewart.

Before we get to that, Jade Rabbit has been tweeting, and tweeted a rather touching goodbye:

Although I should’ve gone to bed this morning, my masters discovered something abnormal with my mechanical control system. My masters are staying up all night working for a solution. I heard their eyes are looking more like my red rabbit eyes. Nevertheless, I’m aware that I might not survive this lunar night.

If this journey must come to an early end, I am not afraid. Whether or not the repairs are successful, I believe even my malfunctions will provide my masters with valuable information and experience.

The sun has already set here and the temperature is falling very quickly. I’ve said a lot today, yet still feel like it’s not enough. I’ll tell everyone a secret. Actually, I’m not feeling especially sad. Just like any other hero, I’ve only encountered a little problem while on my own adventure.

Good night, planet Earth. Good night, humanity.

china's lunar rover has mechanical trouble

beijing (ap) china says its first lunar rover is experiencing mechanical problems, in a rare setback for its burgeoning space program.

the six-wheeled yutu vehicle began operating last month after making the first soft landing on the moon by a space probe in 37 years. It was designed to roam the lunar surface for three months while surveying for natural resources and sending back data, along with its stationary lander, chang'e 3.

the mission has been a popular success for china's space program and the rover has attracted more than 150,000 followers on its microblog. It last posted on saturday saying repairs were underway and hope was not lost.

"sorry to make you all sad. The engineers and i haven't given up yet," the posting said.

the mechanical problems appeared to be related to the solar-powered probe's process for shutting down for the lunar night, which lasts more than two weeks. The temperature during that time drops to minus 180 degrees celsius (minus 292 degrees fahrenheit).

the probe had survived its first lunar night shutdown, during which it is unable to generate energy from its solar panels and relies on a radioactive power source to keep its delicate sensors and other equipment intact.

They may exaggerate the role of one party or dynastic rule, but they generally don't rewrite history or add fictitious elements/events. This could be due to the fact that every dynasty writes the history of the dynasty before, and a lot of responsibility in vested in the recording of events truthfully, even if interpretations may differ.

Korean girls are 2nd class citizens in their own country, no thanks to the male chauvinist society there. Once they're married, most are not allowed to hold down a job or travel alone, unless the couple badly needs a second income. Wife-beating is rife, as is physical and sexual abuse of women in sports and entertainment industry. Female employment rate is the lowest among OECD countries, and women in corporations are just flowerpots making tea for their bosses. (Unless, of course, your father is the chairman or owner of the company, in which case you'd been given a top management position.)

Don't be a woman in Korea. Or you'd have to spend thousands on plastic surgery and cosmetics to make it in entertainment, or attract a rich man to marry you. And then hell begins.

‘It came back to life’: China’s Jade Rabbit snaps out of silence but mechanical kinks remain

The Jade Rabbit lunar rover has bounced back to life but is suffering the same problems as before, state media reported on Thursday.

China National Radio quoted the country’s lunar programme spokesman Pei Zhaoyu as saying the rover showed signs of "wakefulness".

“It’s basically returned to the state it was in before it went to sleep,” Pei said. “It’s awake, but the problems are still there.”

Xinhua posted on its official Weibo account also quoting Pei as saying the lunar rover still could be saved.

“Jade Rabbit went to sleep in an abnormal state. We were worried it wouldn’t be able to endure the lunar night’s extremely low temperatures, but it’s come back to life! As long as it’s alive, there’s the possibility it can be saved.”

“Hi, anyone there?” space enthusiasts posted on Jade Rabbit’s unofficial Weibo account on Thursday, prompting thousands of responses within minutes.

In late January, the six-wheeled rover reported a “mechanical control abnormality” and was pronounced dead six weeks into its three-month mission and just before the moon entered a two-week lunar night, when temperatures drop to minus 180 degrees Celsius.

Jade Rabbit reached the moon on December 15, making China only the third country to make a soft-landing on the moon and the first since the Soviet Union mission nearly 40 years ago.

The rover has been a source of great pride for China and millions have chartered the rover’s progress and shared in its successes and misfortunes.

Deputy chief designer of Chang’e-3’s probe system Zhang Yuhua told the radio station that the rover had three main mechanical subsystems: one controlled the solar panel’s folding and unfolding function, the second controlled four mast-mounted cameras and the third controlled the front arm. But he said it was unknown where the problem occurred.

The probe is named Yutu or Jade Rabbit after the pet of Chang’e, the goddess of the moon in Chinese mythology.

An unverified weibo user “Jade Rabbit Lunar Rover”, which has posted first-person accounts in the voice of the probe, made its first update since January, when it had declared: “Goodnight, earth. Goodnight, humans.”

Xinhua has said the account is “believed to belong to space enthusiasts who have been following Yutu’s journey to the moon”.

China first sent an astronaut into space a decade ago and is the third country to complete a lunar rover mission after the United States and the former Soviet Union.

The rover was tasked to carry out astronomical observations and investigate the moon's geological structure and mineral composition.

The landing was a key step forward in Beijing’s ambitious military-run space programme, which include plans for a permanent orbiting station by 2020 and eventually sending a human to the moon.

The projects are seen as a symbol of China’s rising global stature and technological advancement, as well as the Communist Party’s success in reversing the fortunes of the once-impoverished nation.

The central government said the mission was “a milestone in the development of China’s aerospace industry under the leadership of ... Comrade Xi Jinping”.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the North Koreans beat them to it:

A North Korean central news anchorman said during a live broadcast: “We are very delighted to announce a successful mission to put a man on the sun. North Korea has beaten every other country in the world to the sun. Hung Il Gong is a hero and deserves a hero’s welcome when he returns home later this evening”. Hung is expected back on Earth in just a few hours time, where he will be greeted by his uncle, and supreme leader: Kim Jong-un. Hung travelled in the cover of darkness, as it would protect him from the harsh, and extreme temperatures of the Sun. Hung will also be bringing back some sun spot samples for his uncle, which I’m sure he will show off to the world in a short amount of time.

The North Korean central news agency is calling the 18-hour mission the “greatest human achievement of our time” – and so they should, landing a man on the Sun, a trip that took 18 hours return, is quite the achievement, all things considered. North Korea has topped the lunacy charts with this doozy. I want to know who Hung Il Gong, who gets to be the first man to land on the Sun, is. What did he do to deserve this ‘honor’? I hope they show his heroes welcome on TV for all of us to see. That would be better than Saturday Night Live. -Mort
