A 16-year-old student from a top secondary school here has been arrested on suspicion of drug abuse.

The talk in school was that he had been abusing cannabis and methamphetamine, better known on the street as ganja and ice.

The student has been released on bail, pending investigations by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB).

The CNB confirmed on Monday that its officers picked up the student in the school last week.

The arrest comes amid growing concern over drug usage by young people here.

CNB figures show a rise in the number of drug abusers under 21 years old arrested over the past three years.

The talk among his peers in school was that he had been abusing cannabis and methamphetamine, better known on the street as ganja and ice.

The student has been released on bail, pending investigations by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB).

The CNB confirmed on Monday that its officers picked up the student in the school last Wednesday, but it declined to give further details.

The New Paper spoke to 15 students from the school on Tuesday and Wednesday, but only two were aware that one of their schoolmates had been arrested for drug abuse.

Another three students said they knew of a student who had been taking drugs, but they were not aware of the arrest.

They might however be referring to another student because when TNP told them about the arrest, one of them said: "Huh? But I saw him in school today."

Attempts to reach the school's principal since last Friday were unsuccessful.
