I realized that in the past, most of East Asia was ruled by many strongmen and not much democracy exists in these countries . Examples will be:

Lee Kuan Yew - Singapore

Mahatir (Mad Hatter) - Malaysia

Suharto - Indonesia

Ferdinand Marcos - Philippines

Pol Pot - Cambodia

Park Chun Hee - South Korea (Republic of Korea)

Chiang Kai Shek - Taiwan (Republic of China)

Chairman Mao Zedong - China (People's Republic of China)

Military coups - Thailand

Junta - Myanmar

Taiwan introduced democracy only in 1987 and for South Korea, also in 1987.

Oddly enough, Japan is the only country that of post-1945, is fully democratic and there were no strongmen in Japan. But yet, it is the most developed East Asian country, though PRC will be catching up soon.

Japan Liberal Democratic Party ruled almost continuously in Japan for 54 years from its founding in 1955 until its defeat in the 2009 election.
The new ruling party Democratic Party of Japan is a spinoff from LDP.

Japan was a Party State too.

could it because they believe in idols and not Jesus?

democratic countries are Jesus believers! Allah countries and Atheists countries are the worst lot...:D

Atheist countries are generally tyranny or communists, no surprise that they rank bottom for the democracy index.

But there is one Christian country from the top 15, where is Uncle Sam?

Still, there is no strongman in the sense that one leader is able to rule for 20 years. Look at us and our neighbors.

LKY 1959 - 1990 (Though we all know he is still calling the shots)

Suharto - 1967 - 1998

Mad Hatter - 1981 - 2003

I have not heard of any Japan PM holding that many years of office.
