Dangerous high-pressure water guns, banned nine years ago, will be targeted by officials during Songkran after reports indicated they are still being sold in several provinces, including Bangkok.
Jirachai Moontongroi, the deputy secretary-general of Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB), said officials had asked for cooperation from local manufacturers, retailers and importers of water pistols not to sell guns made from PVC piping or other kinds of hard plastic materials which allow for higher water pressures.
Inspectors had found people can still buy the illegal guns and the OCPB is working with the Consumer Protection Police Division to crack down on their sale, Mr Jirachai said.
The high-pressure guns, which can cause serious injury and accidents, were banned in 2003. The law sets a maximum penalty of six months imprisonment and/or a fine of 50,000 baht for merchants and five years jail and/or a fine of 500,000 baht for manufacturers and importers.
Meanwhile, Khao San Road, scene of some of the most boisterous Songkran Festival celebrations each year, will join in the Thai traditional new year between April 12 and 15.
Piyabutr Jiwaramonaikun, chairman of the Association of Khao San Traders, said the sale and use of talcum powder will not be allowed, and drinking alcohol while walking will be also banned. Security will be tightened in the area, he said.
