STOMPer Terrence was surprised to see a Caucasian man taking put in the Hungry Ghost Festival customs.

"Caucasian person burning incense papers.

"It is a rare sight to see Caucasians believing in the Chinese "Hungry Ghost Festival".

"Especially in Singapore, this period is known to many as the seventh month where those whom have passed on return to earth from the other world.

"The 'Good brothers' from what people usually say are lost souls whom no one prays for them.

"Participating in such incense burning for these 'lost brothers' would in return provide good luck to the person or company and what they wish for.

Ang mo don't need to intergrate, perhaps just respecting and taking part in local customs. Nothing to be so surprising about...

During the lunar 7th month, indeed many foreigners make it a point to participate in the ceremonies. It is common to see even Japanese MDs, CEOs being involved in the buring of joss sticks, paper, etc, despite their strong homogenous Japanese culture and Shinto practices. If they are garang and don't take part, if some serious accident really happen at the factory or work site, see how they are going to answer for it...they dare to refuse their offerings and prayers to the local deities?....

Whether in Singapore or Africa, it is prudent for an investor, where ever he comes from, to take part in some of the local ceremonies to demonstrate their respect for the local populace...those that don't come across as arrogant, standoff-ish and eventually some personal or industrial relations problems are bound to happen...

From the pic, I think the ang mo is one of the executive or maybe their boss. As I can see the two guys on the left pic are maybe their employees as they are wearing some kind of uniform. Good, integration.

This is what pisses me off about local ppl. They get so enamored with these foreigners that partake in local customs but when they go overseas and partake in those foreigners customs i doubt the foreigners would even raise an eyebrow. I am not really sure but it seems like local chinese seem the most likely to enamored when they see foreigners practice their customs cos it seems like they don't like their own customs.
