ST plucks figures out of nowhere to show YOG “boosts” tourism
September 30th, 2010 | Author: Your Correspondent

Embarrassed by a series of high profile YOG screw-ups which has damaged the PAP’s reputation beyond repair, its propaganda mouthpiece Straits Times has gone on an offensive to defend Singapore hosting the YOG to the extent of plucking figures from nowhere to confuse, mislead and deceive unsuspecting Singaporeans.

In an article with the most inappropriate headline “YOG boosts tourism“, ST journalist Jessica Lim proclaims that “the number of tourists to Singapore last month shot up 18 percent compared to August last year, DUE IN PART to the Youth Olympic Games” without quoting the actual number of tourists who came to Singapore specifically to watch the YOG and the contribution they made to our GDP. (read article here)

Embattled PAP minister in charge of the YOG Dr Vivian Balakrishnan claimed earlier that he believed Singapore will “recoup” its initial investment in the YOG without substantiating his statement (as usual).

By now, we should already have the EXACT figures on the amount of money the YOG has generated for Singapore’s economy, but it appears that the PAP dares not reveal the truth to the public.

It is disgenuous of Jessica Lim to compare the number of tourist arrivals this August to that of last year and attributed it to the YOG for it will be higher anyway this year due to an improving global economy.

Furthermore, the opening of the two integrated resorts (IRs) is a huge draw to tourists in the region and probably contributed more to the spike in tourist arrivals than the YOG itself.

While there is little doubt that the YOG may contribute a token increase in the number of arrivals, questions must be raised whether it is value for money after the PAP regime splurged an obscene $387 million dollars of taxpayers’ monies on it.

The fact that Jessica Lim is deliberately witholding information which she could easily have found out by checking with the relevant authorities shows up her intellectual dishonesty and gross lack of journalistic ethics, principles and professionalism.

With the election looming ahead, we can expect more such brainless, nauseating and disgusting propaganda hogwash from papers owned by the Singapore Press Holdings which should really change its name to the “Singapore Propaganda House” to better reflect its primary role as the unofficial mouthpiece of the PAP regime.
