Now with electronic parking, wouldn't HDB know how many reserved parking lots that they should be, thus no need to restrict certain parking lots to season ticket holders only. Also, with every intention to go car lite, shouldn't parking charges be increased so as to decrease the demand and usage of parking spaces. Shouldn't the price of season and hourly parking be increased so that there can at all times have some vacant capacity for parking for all, with season parking rates being determined by the hourly parking rate needed to curb usage. This is important to shift the population towards going car lite like using PMD, public transportation etc.

Probably, the season parking rate should be at 50% discount from the average parking rate based on the average hours a car is parked under the season parking scheme or about 20% of the hourly parking rate as if the car was parked their for the whole month without leaving the carpark, whichever is higher.

Singapore has been making an effort to educate the population about the importance of sustainability, going green and being environmentally friendly. With this in mind, we should take a second look at entrenched practices which may be harming the environment.

Take, for example, the practice of reserving the lower floors of multi-storey carparks in public housing estates for season parking, with hourly parking only on the higher floors. Hourly-parked cars tend to have a higher turnover than season-parking vehicles. So, if hourly-parking spaces were on the lower floors instead, there would logically be fewer pollutants discharged by cars.

Why should we give season-parking holders the convenience and then have other motorists pollute the environment?

We may be surprised to find how much we can reduce pollutants and save fuel by just moving the hourly-parking spaces to lower floors.

I encourage individuals, institutions and government agencies to take another look at basic practices in daily life such as this, where a small change can go a long way in saving the environment.

And what do banks care? The damage by rising sea levels will be picked up by the insurance companies.

Probably this is the main reason why season parking lots are the most accessible lots, however this causes collateral damage to the environment due to longer journeys that hourly parking cars have to travel.

Probably, one compromise with modern computerised gangtry technology is to have two different entry points, one lane for mixed use and one reserved for season parking holders only so that the relevant ratios can be controlled vz AI monitoring (condition: always reserve margin of 5 vacant lots for season parking holders at all times). The best option would be to manage by surge pricing. Hourly parking rates will change according to demand and the car owners will be notified vz SMS or Whatsapp 15 mins before there is a surge in parking price which will also be displayed in real time on LTA app/website: they may then decide to continue parking or else move the car to a cheaper carpark. Season parking holders can be charged retrospectively based upon the hours parked but with a bulk discount (one month maximum use deposit will be collected from subscribers). This will ensure optimal use and maximum government costs recovery of the available car park spaces.
