SPP in Parliament

Wilfred has always been a loyal and responsible chap, and would not take up anything he cannot commit. Yet will not quit the party. And Ben loves Wilf like a brother and stands for him as faith mentor, not like the ambitious wolf some made him out to be. What I was little surprised was that SPP leadership vacuum is also critical and if they do not run for CEC, I am not sure how the gaps can be plugged.

Do u know why the Chiams initially thought Desmond would make a better successor than Wilfred?
Comparing the 2, and unless there are things unknown to the public, cannot understand it.

I don't think the Chiams thought Desmond was better. Just that Desmond joined earlier, was there longer and occupied more senior posts. In fact, edging out of Desmond led to him plotting in return to win over PKMS and SJP hence taking control of SDA Council and causing SPP to pull.

SDA and SPP became like Malaysia UMNO and Singapore PAP - each side had full control over their own space but lack it on the other side, but SPP was inside SDA, so had to pull out.

I just read an article on yahoo news about the SPP.
The article referred to internal conflict within the party.
If it's true, really sad and disappointing.

"Several CEC members whom this reporter spoke to on Saturday admitted that internal relations among the SPP’s leadership turned sour after the 2011 May General Election, when seven members of the party stood in two single wards — Hong Kah North and Potong Pasir — and the Bishan-Toa Payoh Group Representative Constituency.

A rift appears to have developed between newer members of the party’s CEC and those who have led the party for a longer time, and Pwee confirmed there were differences over the style of leadership within the CEC.

“Most of us have been trying to move toward a more collective style of team leadership in the SPP, where we can consult with one another and make decisions together, or at least with a majority,” said Pwee, who added that other members of the CEC were more used to Mr and Mrs Chiam making all the decisions."

That's the problem with most of the parties. CST=SPP, CSJ=SDP, PAP=LKY, RP=KJ. They are personality cults and SPP's failure was because CST did not share power and trust. His wife stood in PP when there were obviously more capable candidates from his SPP for the job. Wilfred could stand it no longer obviously.

I am getting the impression that they could tolerate Chiam but not the wife. The comments are coming from the vets and the newcommers not about the wife but what else could it be.

It has come to a pass indeed: breaking news from Yahoo that 6 members of the SPP have resigned - Wilfred, Ben Pwee, Ting the long-timer, Hamim and his wife Juwaiti and David Tan a TJS loyalist. Now only another Chiam loyalist Yong and former DL buddy Yen remains.

Quite confirmed since Wilfred who was staunching dismissing dissensions as rumours and dissing the media for such a story, has deleted these comments on FB.

My own guess is the group will head to NSP, and TJS will join them there.

SINGAPORE: Six members of the opposition Singapore People's Party have resigned from their party.

They include Wilfred Leung and former civil servant Benjamin Pwee, who were widely expected to succeed the incumbent leader, Mr Chiam See Tong.

The others who resigned are the party's Organising Secretary, Ting Sze Jiang; Head of the Malay/Muslim Affairs Bureau, Mohamad Hamim bin Aliyas; Head of the Women's Wing, Mrs Mohamad Hamim bin Aliyas; and Head of the SME Businessmen Bureau, David Tan.

This comes ahead of the Party Congress to be held on Sunday, where a new Central Executive Committee (CEC) is to be formed.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, Mr Pwee said: "For us, Mrs Chiam is a non-constituency MP. So we feel that it is time for SPP to rise up to become a national-level party and address national issues, beyond just a single local constituency alone. So I think there are some differences in terms of approach and emphasis as to what level we (should) play at."

In a media statement, the members cited differences in opinion about party leadership styles and the future direction.

It added that deep and long-term relationships within the key CEC members had also "quickly unravelled and broken down".

But two-thirds of the CEC remain, and the Party Congress to elect a new CEC will proceed as planned.

In a posting on the Facebook page of his wife Lina Chiam, as well as that of the SPP, Mr Chiam said the six members wanted to pursue their own interests.

He said the party respects them on this. He added that there is no change at this moment and that it will be "operations as usual".

Mr Chiam said the party under his leadership will continue to seek new passionate and talented individuals, with the right aptitude and who will pursue the opposition cause cohesively.

SINGAPORE: The opposition Singapore People's Party (SPP) held its Ordinary Party Conference (OPC) on Sunday, and has elected a new Central Executive Committee (CEC).

It comprises of the eight remaining members of the previous CEC, after six members quit on Saturday.

It is understood that if there are any new faces, they will be co-opted into the CEC.

The closed door session began at about 1.15pm at the party's new headquarters at 1 Siang Kuang Avenue. 20 to 30 cadres and supporters also attended the session.

At about 2.20pm, Mrs Lina Chiam stepped out to give a statement to the media.

She said the OPC has proceeded to re-elect the remaining members of the CEC.

The election of the office bearers will take place after the first CEC meeting. The OPC also fully supports the leadership of the CEC.

Mrs Chiam declined to reveal the names and number of members in the committee, adding that this will be revealed later.

It is understood that both Mrs Chiam and Mr Chiam remain in the committee, along with old members like Sin Kek Tong, Jason Leong and Yong Seng Fatt.

The CEC will meet in three weeks to decide on the positions.

do you really think she has the heart to serve, shee been lying low after effing it up in PE .... even before that she was seldom seen in Macpherson...

using her new found flame for, she been trying to get as much media exposure as possible....like Sarah Palin.....

most of the policy were done by Hazel she just parrot it on FB when Hazel is done.... whatever you think of KJ... his critique of NICole as a PAP apologist is spot on...

Gerald may have flub things up a bit but that is nothing in comparison to what we will see if Nicole is in parliament... this gal know nothing about hard policy problem.... she is really good at giving scripted answer, that is all....
but because she is a little gal every1 cut her some slack .. since she is not in parliament anyway....

if you guys really scrutinise her hard at forums she been to .... you will see she is like telfon, and really she is empty... she will deflect the hard questions... she will wait for PAP and WP side to speak and then she will come up with some safe vague middle ground answers....

and if you think WP is damn middle ground already.... wait til you see nicole...

our parliament is a hostile parliament.... WP think they can ignore the hostility ... how dumb ... nicole is goin to get tear apart upside down inside if she get there... if you think ling how doong is bad... wait til you see her inside... actually I hope we never see her inside...

the only reason why PAP doesn shredded apart Lina is because she is no threat at all ... she is no gerald ot JJ.... her highest losing vote % is a actually a drop in vote count...

she is like court jester ,,, totally way of out her depth.... things will get worse now that Ben has left....
