Offer Singaporeans an exclusive preview at Sentosa

LAST Friday, I queued up at Resorts World Sentosa to try and get tickets for the eight-day sneak-peek period. I had to wait nearly two hours in the queue before finding out that the tickets were sold out for all eight days.
The vast majority of people who had queued before me to purchase the tickets were foreigners. I am very disappointed that as a Singaporean, I am unable to get even a sneak preview of what is supposed to be a proud achievement for Singapore and Singaporeans.
Once the theme park is opened with all the rides fully functional, we are going to see a rush of hundreds of thousands of visitors wanting to get a glimpse of the first Universal Studios theme park in South-east Asia.
There will be a surge in the number of tourists, especially from neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Indonesia. Tour operators are already fully booked many months in advance, so it will be terribly crowded for many weeks or months after the official opening.
This is only going to add to the frustrations of Singaporeans who have been following the building of the integrated resort with keen interest at every stage.
I hope Resorts World Sentosa would extend the preview period exclusively for Singaporeans and allow limited theme park rides before the official opening. This would be useful for the operator as well - it could gather valuable feedback and fine-tune areas that need improvement before opening its doors to the world.

'The resort management could have done better by keeping these people occupied with some event rather than letting them lie down like that.'

MR PHUI PENG CHUAN: 'What captured my attention on the front page of yesterday's The Straits Times was not the people in the queue waiting to enter the casino at Resorts World Sentosa, but those who were sleeping or lying down at the front, in anticipation of a long wait. The resort management could have done better by keeping these people occupied with some event rather than letting them lie down like that. There were also problems like small toilets with few cubicles and urinals, and poor directional signs. The management really has to look into these areas before the surge in crowds.'
