S'poreans often cite the warm and humid weather for them dressing sloppily when out and about. Even though it is possible to dress in fashionable summer tops and bottoms (without layering) paired with casual footwear, many people do not give a second thought to leaving their homes in torn and faded T-shirts, tank tops, shorts and slippers. Why do locals not take more pride in their appearance when going outdoors?

What good is taking pride living in a shameful country?

My wife and daughter love loose silhouettes i.e. flowy dresses, maxi skirts as well as pants with wide-legs. They like shorts, skirts and dresses that are above the knee for better air circulation. They love to embrace our tropical weather which includes wearing hats, sunglasses and sandals that are practical and stylish. They focus on comfort and breathable fabrics to look stylish and still feel cool in our warm and humid conditions. They believe that fashion is about expressing themselves. That is taking pride in their dressing.

Those of us who are well-travelled would have seen how the Japanese, Koreans, North Americans, Europeans etc. dress fashionably as well as sensibly in summer. It doesn't have to be one or the other. Dress to please yourself, but bear in mind that comfort and fashion can easily co-exist.

IMHO, the dress fashionably syndrome had already ended in the late 80s, shortly after the cp kid era, followed by another short stint of America billboard chart copycats like bros, dp etc. that ended in the early 90s.

I was locked on to the mentioned fashion sensed from 1983 to 1991.
After that period to today's fashion , there were no more real fashion to follow, purely freestyles and looking like shit.

There was a big identifier difference with the cp kid fashion vs the current era fashions.

In those days, you need not join any gang.
The dressings was the identifier.
Once you dressed as one, people will assume you belonged to the big gang.
Same for the billboard fashions.

Probably becos it was not readily available and more well defined, compared to todays fashion, it was deemed a more valuable fashions.

We have more options outside of work to wear casual wear that is relaxed yet smart. As long as our clothing is not torn, faded, mismatched, rotting, frayed or dirty, we are presentable. We don't need to be wearing jackets, waistcoats, pants, long sleeves etc. to look fashionable.

After those locked on fashions ended, I could no longer follow any fashion, and that's when I started to dress casually with t-shirt and Bermuda.

But I didn't expected that in the mid 90s, fashion could be extended to riding a motosikal, specifically a scooter, preferaby either a vespa or a skipper.
Without further waiting , I was into it and once again, I found anothet new "gang" that could be seen easily over the island.

if you are good looking anything you wear will look good,
if you are a pig please dont wear something that will you look even more stupid.......

Have you seen old football fans with beer bellies wearing tight fitting jerseys of their favourite clubs? There are quite a number of them.

This is fashionable casual dressing for summer.

Depends on where you are going to. If it's just to the nearby hawker center or kopitiam, I'll just wear t-shirt, shorts and slippers. Want to show off to who?

Are you trying to tell people how they should dress and not respecting their way of dressing?

You do not seem to comprehend my earlier post. I was merely wondering why most S'poreans do not take more pride in their appearance when going outdoors. How did you interpret that as telling people how they should dress?

Dressing for comfort does not mean looking sloppy or unkempt. Putting on acceptable apparel has absolutely nothing to do with showing off. How did you come to that conclusion?

I am asking that question as I am not sure . Did u see the ❓ and my starting sentence with " Are you..." Asking a question and stating a statement are 2 different thing.

My apologies for misunderstanding that you were merely asking a question. I was just wondering why most of us do not take more pride in our appearance when out and about in SG.

Everyone's mindset and reality is different from each other. fashion and beauty as re very subjective. What you think as beauty and fashion might not be the same for others. Some might even think having such idea of fashion is senseless.
