S'porean man, 60, allegedly steals over S$400 worth of beef from 2 supermarkets in 1 day​

The man pleaded guilty to one charge of theft.

A 60-year-old Singaporean man allegedly stole more than S$400 worth of beef from two Orchard supermarkets on the same day in January 2025 before he was caught by staff who called the police.

Charge sheets seen by Mothership showed that Chua Peng Kiong faces two charges of theft.

He pleaded guilty to one charge, Shin Min Daily News reported, adding that the other charge will be taken into consideration during sentencing.

Cold Storage​

This comes after Chua visited the Cold Storage supermarket at Takashimaya Shopping Centre after 2pm on Jan. 20, 2025.

He put an empty eco-friendly bag into the shopping basket, Shin Min reported, adding that this aroused the attention of the store clerk, who thought he was acting suspiciously.

Chua then reportedly took four packets of meat from the shelf, including three packets of Angus grain ribeye worth over S$137 and one packet of Japanese Wagyu A4 worth over S$111, and put them in the eco-friendly bag.

After leaving the supermarket at about 2:58pm without paying, a supermarket inspector apprehended Chua on the spot and called the police.

Chua was then arrested at about 4:55pm, when the police recovered the four packets of meat from him, which were subsequently returned to the supermarket.

Don Don Donki​

This comes after Chua was said to have stolen beef from the Don Don Donki Japanese supermarket in Orchard Central earlier on the same day.

He reportedly stole five packets of beef worth a total of S$167.

This included two packets of A4 Wagyu Karubi worth almost S$60, two packets of A4 Wagyu Zabuton Shabu Shabu worth around S$77 and one packet of A4 Wagyu Kata Rosu Shabu Shabu worth almost S$30.

Sentencing​

According to Shin Min, Chua's lawyer, who pleaded for leniency in court on Apr. 14, 2026, said Chua deeply regretted his actions and was willing to take responsibility for them.

The prosecution did not object to a mandatory treatment order report first, Shin Min reported, adding that the judge adjourned the case to May 20, 2026, for sentencing.
