After getting to know an underage girl through Carousell around June 2022, a Singaporean man, then 42, offered to pay her S$11,000 per month to have sex with her and told her that he had bought her an Apple handphone as a gift.
Although the man, Chan Yan Tze Aaron, did not have the money to fulfil these promises, he proceeded to bring the girl, then 16, into a cubicle in a female toilet at his condominium and performed sexual acts on her.
When the girl turned down Chan's request to take things further and asked him to fulfil his promise of paying her, Chan continued lying to her that he would pay her later and asked her to perform a sexual act on him.
Instead of paying the girl after their meet-up, Chan sent her fictitious screenshots that showed a S$35,000 transfer, lied to her that he had applied for a supplementary credit card in her name, and offered her a counterfeit Rolex watch.
The man's deeds came to light after the girl lodged a police report at Woodlands West Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) in July 2022.
On Jun. 23, 2025, Chan, now 45, was sentenced to four years and five months in jail after admitting to his offences, reported Shin Min Daily News.
According to court documents seen by Mothership, Chan got to know the girl through Carousell after she posted a listing in early 2022.
It stated, "I'm 17 Female Chinese. I like my friends driving me in cars and I am bored, looking for friends".
Around June 2022, Chan sent messages to the girl via Carousell, asking if she wanted to earn "extra pocket money".
The pair continued chatting on Telegram.
Chan repeatedly offered the girl money in exchange for her to meet and spend time with him.
While Chan initially offered her S$2,500 per month, he increased his offer to S$5,000 after the girl ignored him.
After the girl conversed with him again, Chan began asking about her boundaries, such as the "dos" and "don'ts" during their meetings.
He also invited her to a hotel, but he decided not to follow through with the plan after he realised that she was only 16.
He then made offers, such as S$100 for sex and S$150 per hour for platonic dates, to the girl.
The girl rejected the offers as she felt that they were too low.
But she eventually agreed to meet Chan at his residential unit at his invitation.
On Jul. 3, 2022, Chan booked a car for the girl and arranged to meet her at his condominium residential unit at night.
After meeting her at around 9pm, Chan told the girl that his ex-girlfriend was a minor who was very open-minded and that he would have sex with his ex-girlfriend in public toilet cubicles.
He also shared that he would have sex with three other people who were his "friends with benefits".
Chan offered to pay the girl S$11,000 monthly, which comprised S$5,000 cash and S$6,000 of credit on a debit card or credit card, for her to have sex with him.
When they were eating the food Chan bought for the girl, he also lied to her that he had purchased an Apple handphone as a gift to her and invited her to meet him again a few days later to collect the handphone, along with the S$11,000 payment.
Even though he had no financial means to fulfil his promises, Chan brought the girl to a cubicle in a female toilet in his condominium and started kissing her.
He also asked the girl to take off her clothes and proceeded to perform sexual acts on her after she complied.
When Chan asked the girl whether they could take things further, the girl refused and asked him to fulfil his promise of paying her instead.
However, Chan remained persistent, tried to perform a sexual act on her repeatedly, and told the girl that he was "already horny".
He also reassured her that he would pay her later, adding that she should have told him earlier if she wanted the money there and then.
Although the girl tried to push him away, Chan continued performing sexual acts on her and touching her body, including her private parts.
Their meeting came to an end after the girl agreed to perform a sexual act on Chan at his request.
From the date of their meet-up till Jun. 23, 2025, the day of Chan's sentencing, he did not make any payment to the girl.
Instead, he sent the girl fictitious screenshots showing a S$35,000 transfer to her bank account and lied that he had applied for a supplementary credit card in her name.
Around Jul. 8, 2022, Chan also offered the girl a Rolex yacht master watch as payment for her sexual services, but the watch turned out to be a counterfeit.
A real Rolex watch of that make was valued at S$35,000.
Chan continued asking for sexual services from the girl till Jul. 7, 2022, even though he had no intention of paying her.
The girl was not the only person Chan had deceived in recent years.
Court documents revealed that since Aug. 4, 2021, Chan had regularly shown a colleague screenshots of his alleged profits from online trading while at work.
Besides offering to "teach" his former colleague about trading, Chan also offered to trade on his colleague's behalf and promised him that he could receive a profit within three months if he were to give Chan some money.
Around Dec. 3, 2021, Chan sent the colleague a screenshot of a transfer of S$15,250 to his bank account, claiming that it was the profit he had earned on behalf of the colleague.
In reality, the screenshot was generated using the scheduled transfer function in Chan's banking application, and he would cancel the transfer after forwarding the screenshot.
Chan repeated his screenshot profit scam on Dec. 15 and Dec. 18, 2021, and the colleague transferred Chan S$1,950 in several tranches over the course of four months.
After the colleague lodged a police report against Chan in April 2022, Chan promised on three occasions that he would make a monthly restitution of S$350.
However, as of Jun. 23, 2025, Chan had only made a partial restitution of S$500.
Although two police reports were lodged against him in 2022, Chan went on and deceived another colleague in January 2023.
After learning that the colleague wanted to buy an iPhone from the Apple store, Chan told the colleague that he had a friend working for Apple, and he could buy the iPhone with a staff discount.
Induced by Chan's promises, the colleague transferred him a total of S$1,950 in two tranches so that Chan could purchase the iPhone on his behalf.
However, Chan had no intentions of buying the iPhone, as he had a gambling habit and had intended to cheat his colleague in exchange for money to gamble.
After Chan gave various excuses for his inability to deliver the iPhone and even sent a fictitious screenshot claiming to have refunded the colleague S$2,000, the colleague lodged a police report in May 2023.
Although Chan offered to make restitution of S$500 every month, he had not made any payment to the colleague as of Jun. 23, 2025.
