S'pore man, 37, raped wife's niece, then 13, continued sexual relations for 9 years, gets 20 years' jail
The man was also sentenced to 24 strokes of the cane.

A 37-year-old man in Singapore who sexually assaulted and raped his wife's underage niece, then 13 was sentenced on Apr. 13, 2026, to 20 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane.
The accused, who cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the victim's identity, faced 15 charges, Shin Min Daily News reported.
This includes sexual exploitation of a minor, aggravated sexual assault of a minor, and statutory rape, where the man was 27 years old at the time of his offences.He pleaded guilty to three charges at the High Court on Apr. 13, with the remaining charges taken into consideration during sentencing.
Case details
According to Shin Min, the victim, now 23, had previously moved into a public housing unit with her brother in mid-2013, where they lived with her grandmother and the accused's wife.Later in 2015, the accused also moved into the flat after getting married.
In April 2015, when no one else was home, the accused touched the girl's breasts and forcibly kissed her in a room, Shin Min reported.He also grabbed her hand and placed it on his genitals.
Overnight trip
In June 2015, the girl went to Johor Bahru, Malaysia, with her grandmother, the accused and his wife for an overnight trip during the school holidays.The four of them slept in the same hotel bed, Shin Min reported, adding that the girl was sleeping next to the accused when she accidentally placed her hand on his genitals.
He then removed her hand before placing it back on her genitals and touching her breasts.
Asked to keep secret
Shin Min reported that a few days after this, when no one else was home, the accused forced the girl to perform oral sex on him before raping her, taking her virginity.She later complained to the accused about pain in her private parts, to which he reportedly said the pain would go away in a few days and asked her to keep it a secret.
Statutory rape
Following this, the accused forced the girl to perform oral sex on him again in late 2015 and sexually assaulted and raped her for two years between 2015 and 2016.The victim was under 14 years old during this period, which meant the accused had committed statutory rape, Shin Min reported.
Continued relations
From 2016 to 2018, when the girl was in secondary school, they had sexual intercourse a few times each week.The defendant continued sexual relations even after the victim reached adulthood.
From 2019 to 2024, the accused and the victim had sexual intercourse in a number of locations, including his vehicle, at hotels or other places.
Investigations revealed that before the accused began to sexually assault and rape the victim, the two had a good relationship, where they saw one another as father and daughter.
According to Shin Min, the accused also helped the girl with her school fees and attended parent-teacher meetings at her school.
Found out
On Jun. 9, 2024, the man left his Apple watch with his wife when he went out for a smoke. His wife accidentally saw text messages between him and the victim.While he denied the relationship when she confronted him about it, the wife later messaged the victim and said she knew about their relationship.
The victim then confessed. With her consent, the wife took the victim to file a police report.
