S'pore is a poor role model for Hong Kong - They are right!!

Philip Bowring's opinions regarding Singapore are about as unbiased as an Ayotollah's opinion of the Pope.

Bowring is a former editor of FEER. The publication was well and truly exposed by LKY for being not worth the paper it was printed on. Small wonder Bowring has an axe to grind.

If you're going to live up to your nick, you'll have to try a lot harder. All you've done so far is make a fool of yourself over and over again.

FEER was one of the few foreign publication that dared to showcase the negatives of sinkapore.

They could live better if they choose to move to the New Territories.

unfortunately, much of the land in hk including the new territories is own by a handful of property tycoons, and the legco and prc-nominated and controlled leadership are bought and sold by these tycoons. eminent domain or land acquisition laws have no teeth in hk, when leadership, legco, and tycoons conspire to restrict supply of land.

you'll be lucky in hk to get a 10x10 apartment to live in. the 10x10-ft space includes your bed or bunk, bath, toilet, kitchen, door. you're extra lucky if you have windows, which overlook your neighbors in the next block. hdb flats and blocks are dense, but not that bad as in hk. sinkies should consider themselves extremely lucky for not getting shafted in the front and rear like hongkies.

Well said I have added to your points.

This appeared in the UK too. Singaporeans don't realise just how lucky they are to have the PAP in charge. Their living conditions are paradise compared to much of the rest of Asia.

it's amazing how some highrise hk apartments (e.g. pink and orange buildings in pic) have only 1 tiny flat per floor and much of the floor space is occupied by the staircase and elevator.

obnoxious corruption, collaboration, collusion among property tycoons who also have their fingers in supermarkets, groceries, gas lines to homes when residents need to buy food and cook them to save every dollar....

I'm at my wits end trying to make Singaporeans realise just how lucky they are.

I think LKY had the solution here

You know, the cure for all this talk is really a good dose of incompetent government. You get that alternative and you'll never put Singapore together again: Humpty Dumpty cannot be put together again... my asset values will disappear, my apartments will be worth a fraction of what they were, my ministers' jobs will be in peril, their security will be at risk and their women will become maids in other people's countries, foreign workers. I cannot have that!

LKY : Straits Times, 5 April 2007

LKY didn't want to risk it but perhaps LHL should. In 2015, the PAP should simply tell sinkies "We're taking a well earned break. We've had enough of being unappreciated. LTK can take over for the next two terms. We need a holiday."

It certainly is a marvel of modern engineering. How on earth does it stay upright when the Typhoons strike?

hopefully, it will lean against another building and sway back to original position after typhoon has subsided.

Much of the land in HK owned by a handful of property tycoons? SO what? 80% of the land and 90% of the flats owned by ONE tycoon in singapore. U want to guess the name?

Yes, i wish they would do that. Pay them million $ salaries and they are not appreciated? Fuck u and wake your ideas.

i'm sure that if the opposition in sg have majority rule, they would have control over gov-owned lands and housing policies. this is unlike hk, where the gov and regulatory bodies are powerless bootlickers of the handful of tycoons.

The value PAP ministers add to the economy and the collective net worth of Singaporeans far outweighs the amount they are being paid.

If salaries were reduced and the PAP team deposed of, the Singapore economy would slump, GDP would drop by 50% or more, salaries would plummet for everyone and foreign investment would come to a screeching halt.

i dont see why they have to bootlick the tycoons, they can simply tax them heavily.....increase rental tax to 39% and taxes on property gains when they sell....also impose property taxes on all property and land owned......so if they have land or property that is unoccupied or unused they have to pay taxes on it while its sitting there.

however if gov owns 80% of housing and land then obviously there would be a conflict of interest....it would be all profit based and no regulations.u have shenenigans like the freaking hdb selling 340 units of flats for 160m and giving the tender to the cheapest tiong contractor they can find......94m....now what kind of gov does that?charge u sky high prices and give u a piece of shit made by tiong product so they can rob the shit out of u?U WOULD THINK THE HDB HAS UR BEST FUCKING INTEREST AT HEART SINCE THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE TAKING CARE OF ITS OWN PEOPLE.
