A Singaporean man trying to view a condominium apartment in Upper Bukit Timah came in for a rude shock when the real estate agent flatly denied his request for being local.
The 36-year-old man, identified as Zhou in media reports, reached out to Shin Min Daily News to tell his story and express his surprise at what unfolded.
He revealed he was looking to move the family closer to the Upper Bukit Timah area as one of his children is set to attend primary school nearby.
After finding a listing for a unit in Southaven II – located at Hindhede Walk – on the PropertyGuru website, he contacted its agent to arrange for a viewing.
However, when the agent discovered Zhou was local, he replied the message with: “Sorry, no Singaporean.” The man shared screenshots of his conversation with the agent.
According to Mothership’s reporting of the incident, the agent explained that the landlord, who is a foreigner, had a bad previous experience with local tenants which resulted in legal action.
As per Mothership, Zhou felt that it was absurd and unfair Singaporeans were being excluded from homes in their own country.
Shin Min also spoke to an executive at a prominent property agency who said agents are not allowed to refuse tenants based on nationality.
