PROBLEMS FACED BY LOW COST LABOR IN CHINA

Workers are routinely forced to work excessive hours, labor under terrible conditions, suffer frequent injuries, are exposed to dangerous chemicals, and live in dormitories that are firetraps. Some work twelve-hour shifts, seven day work weeks, with only two trips to the bathroom a day. Some aren’t allowed to leave their factory compound. Some female workers are sexually harassed by their bosses.

A group called the National Labor Committee reported that the Dongguan-based KYE Systems Corp factory, which produces web cams, mice and X-Box controllers for Microsoft, treated its workers poorly. A report by the group claims that the 16- and 17-year-olds work 15-hour shifts for about 50 cents an hour, are prohibited from talking or going to bathroom while working, sleep in cramped 14-person rooms and only allowed to leave factory grounds at certain times.

pmark.gif
Many factories have enforced overtime that goes late into the night on the weekend that defy a 1995 law that limits the work week to five days. Workers are routinely defrauded out their wages, fired if they try to organize a union, forced to work double shifts, and denied benefits that were promised them. In January 2007 a Japanese-owned light manufacturing factory closed, owing the 800 workers that were laid off $625,0000 on in overtime, insurance premiums and severance compensation.

One study showed that 61 percent of the workforce in Guangdong province routinely works seven-day work weeks and many workers work 10- and 12-hour days. Even when wages are fair they barely enough to live in China's increasingly expensive cities. Workers who get paid $160 a month in cities where new apartment can cost $300,000 or more are understandably having a hard time just paying their expenses. Chinese labor activist Han Dongfang wrote in Global Viewpoint, “Many factory workers have to put in more than 60 hours of overtime each month just to get by, performing the same robotic task time and again for hours on end without a break and no social interaction . No one can stand this mind-numbing and dehumanizing work 12 hours a day, six days a week.”

There are also many people that prey on the new arrivals: unscrupulous job brokers, fraudulent training programs and numerous scams aimed at cheating the poor and naive or even kidnaping women into prostitution. Migrant workers are often hired at the bus and train station by recruiters who promise them good wages which often don’t materialize. Some quickly become disillusioned by how little money they get for such long, hard work and return home. Some people get trapped, earning so little they can’t leave. Other get fried because of injuries or illnesses sustained in the job and the make their living mugging people and extorting money or some other criminal activity.

In 1990, the world was a very different place and the West was way ahead of Singapore.

If you take stock now, you'll find a very different picture. Much of Europe now has a standard of living that is almost 3rd world. Even Sweden, supposedly the epitome of the welfare state and equality, has been rocked by riots over, of all things, INEQUALITY.

In a world full of turmoil and uncertainty, Singapore is an oasis of calm and prosperity. For that, we have to thank the PAP govt and the capable ministers who run the show.

was that the year me last sat in a trishaw? hmm... that's so long ago...

The Singapore workforce is treated very well. If you look at the way workers are exploited in Bangladesh, India, China and many other 3rd world countries, you'll learn to appreciate the work that Lim and his colleagues have put in over the years.

There are scores of 1st world countries where working conditions are far worse compared to Singapore.

Take NZ as an example :

Horror sweatshops in South Auckland
Vulnerable migrants on the minimum wages made to work with toxic chemicals

"In one factory we saw migrants making chemicals, they wore masks, Wellington boots, manufacturing poisons. Health and Safety have heard from them. Some are paid $10.25 per hour to work here, the minimum wage."

Slaving away in dingy factories in South Auckland are an under-class of disenfranchised migrants and refugees, who are being forced to work for a pittance in appalling conditions by unscrupulous employers.

South Auckland has the biggest concentration of industrial workers in New Zealand and this is where a lot of the exploitative practices are going on.

Joe Carolan and Len Parker, campaign officers of the Solidarity Union, spoke exclusively to Migrant News about one of Auckland's best-kept secrets - the plight of vulnerable industrial workers who are being exploited, bullied and exposed to life-threatening health and safety problems in their workplace. The Solidarity Union wants the government and other agencies to take action to improve the working conditions of these victims in sweatshops.

"As trade unions exist mainly in the public sector." says Carolan, a lot of low-paid immigrant workers in the private sector are not aware of their rights or what proper conditions of work they are entitled to. For example, there are migrants who have degrees in molecular biology but work in warehouses for $12 - $13 per hour because of a lack of New Zealand experience and be-cause employers are questioning their language skills.

What is minimum wage? Never heard before in SG. In SG immigrants are treated like King and the locals are treat like shit.

Minimum wage is pretty much meaningless in any country because it is a theoretical figure.

There is minimum wage in Singapore but only apply to foreigners. There are minimum amount the employers must pay in order to apply for the whatever passes from MOM for the foreigners to work in Singapore.

what do you think? something that came out from the same pappies asshole who said 'every month end look at cpf statement can feel very rich'.

and yet this asshole keep getting into pariahment.

i have nothing to say.

But Boss, the article talks about migrant workers being exploited. Given the current sentiments, I think many sinkies would take no issue with extending the same to our dear FTs here.

Got better examples bo?

Ppl in Nz kp that some migrants minimum wage of $10.75 and are suffering. In Singapore, entry level jobs for locals without a degree is less than their minimum wage. Thats how Useless our labour movement is.
