<article>Sony's Xperia M is on sale now here in Blighty. In case you missed it, the M is a mid-range affair, quite stylish, but a lot easier on the wallet than Sony's flagship Xperia Z. It'll set you back just £189.99 SIM-free from Unlocked Mobiles. That's cheaper than the Lumia 625, and not much more than the bargain bin Lumia 520.
So what do you get for your cash? The 4-inch screen is the same size as the iPhone 5, but it's nowhere near as sharp, with a resolution of 480x800 pixels. The iPhone 5 has a resolution of 640x1,136 pixels, in comparison. Which is quite a lot higher, as you can see. The ppi (pixels per inch) ratings of both phones bear this out, too -- the iPhone 5 is 326 ppi, while the Xperia M a lowly 245 ppi.
While the display might not be as clear and crisp as Apple's flagship, the Xperia M does have a few tricks up its sleeve. Like NFC, for example. This lets you pay for items by just touching your phone against a sensor, or share pictures between devices by tapping them together. You can also listen to music by tapping your phone against an NFC-equipped speaker. Here's a video dripping in dubstep to show you how it works.
Inside, a 1GHz dual-core processor powers things, which pales in comparison to higher-powered mobiles, but should be fine for basic tasks. You'll only get 4GB of internal storage, and only 2GB of that can be used for apps. You can slap in a 64GB microSD card, but the Android Jelly Bean OS won't let you install apps on external storage devices. The 5-megapixel camera, and 0.3-megapixel front-facer are also a bit of a letdown.
Still, that price is pretty tempting. Will you give the M a look? Or could you do better for your money? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook page..

Sony Xperia Z Ultra: How it behaves under water, and post the dip
By Vishal Mathur on 23-08-2013
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra has the IP55/IP58 water and dust resistance ratings. We tested this claim to see if the phone survives a dip!
True to the traditions of the new Xperia flagship smartphones, the Xperia Z Ultra has the IP55/IP58 water resistance ratings, meaning the phone can be kept under 1.5 metres (5 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes. Even the 3.5mm headphone jack, which is the only port not covered by any flap, is water resistant. This is an upgrade over the IP55 rating of the Xperia Z, which could stay in 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. Apart from that, the dust resistance rating remains the same for both devices, the Xperia Z and the Xperia Z Ultra. The real positive aspect of the whole dust and waterproof resistance capabilities is that all ports are nicely covered and that gives the spine design a rather smooth look, not looking overwhelmed by all the ports and the slots.
There are often big claims about a phone’s water resistance capabilities. We didn't have doubts about what Sony was saying about the waterproof for this phone. But, just to give you a visual experience of the claims, we dipped the Xperia Z Ultra in water for around 3 minutes, with a video playing on it.
Not surprisingly, the phone emerged from the dip, alive and kicking. However, it's interesting to note that the touch will not work under water. Also, the pressure from the water is sometimes registered as a touch input, but only at the point in time the phone is immersed, as you can see when the video skipped in the timeline as the phone was being 'drowned'.
Even after the phone has been pulled out of the water, the touch input registers rather erratically. You will need to wipe it with a dry cloth, and once that is done, the touch response is back to normal. We have been using the phone since then, and it is performing normally.
Just to be on the safe side, always double check if the memory card slot, SIM slot and the charging port - all have the water proof covers properly bolted on.
