Core consumer prices in Singapore surged at the fastest rate in more than 13 years last month, led by the rising costs of food, electricity and gas.

Core inflation - which excludes accommodation and private transport costs - jumped to 3.6 per cent in May on a year-on-year basis, up from 3.3 per cent in April.

May's inflation is in line with the 3.6 per cent rise forecast by economists in a Bloomberg poll. It is also the highest since December 2008, when core inflation hit 4.2 per cent.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) said on Thursday (June 23) that core inflation is expected to pick up further in the coming months, before moderating towards the end of the year.

For May, overall consumer prices climbed 5.6 per cent last month, compared to the 5.4 per cent increase in April.

You know things are bad when the PAP technocrats released this unprecedented infographic late last year. To cover their own backsides.

hail comrade kim!

his model of governance has spread like wildfire

now all ang moh countries and their poodles like stinkies are fudging stats, publishing bogus articles, feel good platitudes abound in their leaders' speeches. masses get poorer, unemployed, inflation eating away their wealth and savings. their economis grind to a halt or recede.

much more to come.

got to say putin has done a number on quite a few ang moh countries.

sure thing, russkies are no iran, no north korea, no venezuela.

ask yourselves if based on your experiences, that price increase equals the reported inflation numbers

based on anecdotes, you'd get wildly different numbers

better choice is to collate stats from different sources on prices of essential goods, luxury goods and services , then verify if the stats match the officially reported numbers

no way are the reported numbers accurate

Putin is no Khamenei, Kim, Chavez/Maduro. No Gaddafi or Saddam.

The insignificant nobody me thinks this simple infographics is informative & good. It's not so much about 'covering behinds', but with the high education standards achieved by Singaporeans where each year, with at least 98% passes based upon the population intelligence yardstick on G.C.E 'O' level results alone, it would help MOST to consider the actual REALITIES of what's happening on our planet Earth that we share with others, AND decide for themselves what are the necessary actions to take, as each had been given FREE WILL & the gift of intelligence as proven by mere educational results.

We Singaporeans will leave no one behind, even the 2%, but if they choose to believe lies, truths MIXED with lies, & falsehoods from others, local or worse - foreigners with agenda to use, abuse & destroy all that our Founding & forefathers had built up - based upon their free will to be instigated & presumed abandonment when we citizens had done so much for years to elevate lives, then we can only send thoughts & prayers for them, as the rest of us will, & have to, to progress & evolve not just for ourselves, but loved ones & future generations to come.

There can be NO denial that some products, eg oil, had inflated by more than 50%. But do each citizen drink oil daily? No. Only those who own cars in Spore are feeling the pinch, while the rest of us citizens whom took our efficient buses & mrt in land scarce Spore, & pay for utilities - had our bills rose by 50%? No. At most mere 10cts for transportation, & NO increase in utilities bill IF we rationalize more efficient use of electricity at home, eg - off any electrical appliance when not in use or moderate the use of electricity at home.

There can be NO denial that some products such as chicken had risen by more than 30% now. Most do eat chicken, but had not companies started innovatively to SOURCE for ALTERNATIVES? Had a plate of Chicken rice, most commonly eaten daily, risen today at common Hawker stalls by more than 30% - from $3 to $4? Most had only risen by 30cts & NOT a dollar. Only opportunists would seek to target the foolish whom are willing to fork out even $40 for a simple plate of chicken rice. It's their choice, & must be either the 2% or CEO opportunists whom find gratification in cheating fellow Humans, with their mealy mouthed justifications about ambience, decor, table space, service, etc.

Inflation is real, & happening, & often beyond Spore's control. We are only a small nation. However, fortunately, we do have leaders in govt depts with brains. Well aware of inflation & even recession to come, pro-active measures had been taken behind closed doors, eg - Tripartite Council, between biz leaders, MOM & Workers, to find common ground, to increase salaries, etc, in return for lower taxes, assistance, etc, that most are not aware of or need to, while they attempt to find consensus & solutions daily even at 3am while citizens sleep peacefully in the night. This is Singapore, that our Ah Kongs had built & none will be left behind. We will honor their sacrifices for our todays, generation after generations.

One note that most must be aware of in order to tackle inflation - savings or scrimping on needs WILL NOT save yourself or the economy. If each starts to stop spending even on necessities, then companies will have NOTHING to sell, will have to close, & leave workers jobless. If one refuses to spend such, it's negligible. But when MILLIONS refuse to spend, everyone WILL starve - with no jobs, no productions as during COVid 19 era with countries that enforced foolish lockdowns.

Equally, may CEOs realized that the FREE World operates on the principles of Free Market as the great Adam Smith had envisioned. Only the best survives. Treat the free market as no holds barred, none will survive. Treat it with fair Rule of Law & regulated, each within society WILL thrive & evolve, from the entrepreneur to the road sweeper.
