SINGAPORE — Graduates from Singapore’s autonomous universities (AU) took home starting salaries that were 28 per cent higher than their counterparts from the private education institutions (PEIs), according to a study by economists from the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) which was published in its annual economic survey. This was after accounting for differences in academic abilities, demographic and socio-economic characteristics.

Four AUs were covered in the study: the Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, Singapore Institute of Technology, and Singapore Management University.

According to the study, the largest gap in starting pay between AUs and PEIs was among humanities graduates, with AU graduates earning 39 per cent more.
