When businessman Solomon Tang, 37, was shopping for a compact runabout for his mother-in-law recently, he bought a Renault Kangoo van.
It may not be the last word in sleekness, but at around $70,000 brand new, the 1.5-litre diesel van was far cheaper than some of the cheapest passenger cars. An entry-level Toyota sedan, the Vios 1.5, for instance, costs $100,000.
Mr Tang said of the van: 'It's more practical than a car. And it runs on diesel, so you save quite a lot.'

With cars at near record prices - thanks to a limited supply of certificates of entitlement - buyers have begun looking at cheaper options.

I can buy a freakin' 3.5 Litre LEXUS for 100K! Why anyone wants to live in that shit hole is really beyond me. Has the PAP short circuited all your brains or what! The titchy Island is stiflingly hot, expensive, grossly overcrowded, permanently flooded with scum from 3rd world countries and with water every other month.

Surely there's more to life than the daily torture Sinkies have to go through just to stay alive. For gawds sake come to your senses and look for an alternative abode. The world's a huge place. There's a spot somewhere else with your name on it just waiting for you to arrive. Grab the opportunity while you can.

You don't get rebates. You get to offset the costs of running a business owned vehicle in your tax returns. All businesses do it.

some years back, when petrol prices are soaring, already many are switching to buying vans - kangoo being one of them.

the catch, you cannot buy as an individual, so many go register a company for 1 dollar and use it to purchase a commercial vehicle. Some more, run on diesel - cheaper.

but not everyone can do that - esp employees bcos to register a company, u nid to clear HR...

but of cse, it is not a problem if you really want to...

As long as the taxman accepts your explanation, you can claim the cost of running your vehicle as a business overhead regardless of the make or model.
