Some riot for religious freedom, some for poverty, some for personal freedom. The crazy dutch riot for a teenager birthday who they dun know.

Teenager’s 16th birthday party turns into a riot after 3,000 people turn up when she leaves Facebook invite open to anyone

Riot police were forced to break up crowds at a teenager’s 16th birthday party after 3,000 people turned up because she left the Facebook event invitation open.

There were reports of six people hurt, three seriously, as shops were vandalised and looted, a car set on fire and street signs and lampposts were damaged in the northern Dutch town of Haren.

Up to 600 riot police were on the scene and at least 20 arrests were made, media reports said on Friday night.

As police broke up the crowds, stones, bottles, bicycles and pots of flowers were hurled at them.

The mayhem unfolded after some 30,000 people received the invitation from a girl announcing her 16th birthday party on Facebook.

Intended to be a small-scale celebration, the invitation went viral after the girl did not set the Facebook event to private and forgot to mention it was for family and friends only.

Groningen police spokeswoman Melanie Zwama told AFP: 'She posted the invitation on Facebook and sent it to friends, who then sent it to other friends and soon it spread like wildfire across the internet.'

Reports said up to 3,000 people showed up in the town of only 18,000.
Some party-goers even wore T-shirts made for the occasion. One read: 'Project Haren September 21.'

Others posed for photos outside the girl's house for the event that became known as the Project X-Party after movie Project X (2012) about three teenagers who throw a birthday party which spirals out of control as the night progresses.

Police were on high alert as Haren braced for the event for most of the week. Locals were left to clean up the streets of debris in the aftermath today.

Riot police hit by Facebook party chaos as 4000 turn up to viral invitation in sleepy Dutch town

RIOT police have been forced to contain thousands of party-goers who turned up after a teenager's birthday invite on Facebook went viral.

Dutch news agency ANP quoted a correspondent as saying the situation in Haren near the northern city of Groningen was getting out of control as police were pelted with stones, bottles, bicycles and pots of flowers by angry youths.

Describing "chaos", ANP quoted local police as saying several people had been injured, two seriously.

Four arrests were made, but police said more could be expected after pictures they took were studied.

The police had been on high alert after the schoolgirl posted a message inviting friends to her 16th birthday party on Friday, but forgot to mark it as a private event, prompting more than 20,000 replies.

Public television station NOS said up to 4,000 people, the vast majority of them young, had turned up in Haren, population 18,000. Cars and doorways were damaged by objects thrown at police blocking the street where the girl lives.

Riot police made several charges to disperse the youths trying to get access to the downtown street.

The birthday girl had meanwhile fled her home earlier in the day.

"She posted the invitation on Facebook and sent it to friends, who then sent it to other friends and soon it spread like wildfire across the Internet," Groningen police spokeswoman Melanie Zwama told AFP.

Several websites have sprung up dedicated to the party and referring to 2012 US teen film "Project X" -- about a suburban birthday party getting out of control after an invitation goes viral.

One site referred to Friday's party as "Project X Haren", counting down the seconds to the event and claiming 150,000 people had been invited. It also published the party's address, adding: "By all means bring some friends!"

Previously "Project X" parties have run riot in different parts of the world including Germany, Australia and especially the United States, where teens wrecked an unoccupied Texas home, causing damage of up to $100,000.

Haren braces itself for Project X party

Street signs have been removed, streets closed off and alcohol is banned at the local train station: the Groningen commuter town of Haren is ready for thousands of youngsters who are threatening to turn up to a party on Friday evening.

What should have been a small-scale 16th birthday party has grown into a massive internet hype after 15-year-old Merthe announced plans to celebrate on Facebook, but did not add the event is a private gathering.

Word spread from friend to friend, and by Tuesday, the event had gone viral with spoof videos, dedicated websites, t-shirts and 'after-parties'. A number of YouTube films were put together, promoting the event under the moniker Project X Haren, after an American film based on a suburban party that got out of hand.

Live streaming

According to news agency ANP, one film production company is planning to offer live streaming from the party location from 16.00 hours, using a drone aircraft to film whatever happens.

Nos television reports the girl and her family have now gone into hiding.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people have pledged to turn up in the town, which has a population of 18,000. The council on Thursday rejected a licence to organise an 'alternative event' because 'we cannot guarantee public safety', a spokesman said.

Marketing expert Angelique Lombarts told the NRC Haren can benefit from the hysteria. 'Everyone knows its name, and this is a unique chance because you never get so much free publicity,' she said.
