Some mummy's boy paid $1600 for Tin Peh Ling's Kate Spade bag

SINGAPORE: The Kate Spade bag that became a household name during last year's General Election has a new owner.

The bag belonging to Member of Parliament Tin Pei Ling, whose photo of her posing with the box made the rounds on the internet shortly after she was introduced as a candidate, was auctioned off on Monday for a good cause.

Bids started at S$500. And, after three bids, the bag fetched a final price of S$1,600.

The bidder, who didn't want to be identified, is a 29-year-old man working in the marine trading industry who bought the bag for his mother.

He reasoned his bid to wanting to show his support for AWARE's programmes and the new generation of the young PAP.

Ms Tin Pei Ling, MP for Marine Parade GRC, wanted to help raise money for women's rights group, the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE).

The money raised from its Supersonic Ball will be used to fund its support services.

It's a wise move for the fast-learning MP - getting rid of a totem of envy and at the same time supporting a worthy cause.

The handbag would have otherwise remained an albatross on her neck for years to come for some envious people - notwithstanding the fact that it is a personal gift from her husband. Some people simply can't stomach the fact that MPs or Civil Servants wear or receive branded goods - even those given by their husband, wife or siblings.

It's a case of "it's alright for me, but not alright for an MP or Civil Servant" syndrome. It appears that it's alright for HDB dwellers to carry a Kate Spade handbag or wear a pair of KS shoes, or go on expensive holiday trips, but not an MP or Ministers who earn much more. They want young female MPs to be as humble as the wife of the Prime Minister who always appears to wear good and simple attire on official functions.
