Some are born with good fortune, I just work and try my best

This is a good publicity of who CSJ is as a person.

All his election speeches promising great programmes for the residents can never replace the one on one personal touch with the residents. People want to see the genuineness of the person they are voting for. They want to know if he is humble and sincere in serving the community. They want to know if he is a true friend who they can turn to for help. This is how the Bukit Batok's by election campaign will be won.

My good fortune was to be born in Singapore under PAP rule. PAP's leadership provided many of us with a meritocratic and stable society, which allowed a tremendous amount of social mobility even if you are born poor.

He is talking about his political journey. Some scholars are 'parachuted' into the government by virtue of their standing in the GRC. Some junior Minister of States entered into Parliament by following behind the coat-tails of the Senior Minister in the GRC. They are not tested on their own merits. He doesn't have this kind of fortune. Every contest he fought, he worked tirelessly. This BB by election is no different. He must have done more walkabouts than anyone of the " parachuted" scholars who are now sitting comfortably in their ministry offices (Phew!) and away from the sweaty walkabout sessions.

But one thing for sure, the ordinary folks on the street know CSJ more than those 'scholars" in government offices.

Yours truly thought so too, and used to believe that his country provided many of his committed comrades with a meritocratic army unit, which allowed a tremendous amount of opportunities to raise to the ranks of officers and senior specialists even if you are born an ordinary Singaporean.

Unfortunately, yours truly's faith became disillusioned when his fellow Armour men and poor NSmen officers were sufficiently humiliated by biased and jealous hybrid (non-green beret) Infantry parade officers/warrant officers during the last two days of his military career in the above parade.

Your truly naively thought that he commanded a little respect after contributing his youth to the Defence of his nation, but only to realised that his fair level of recognition and respect is similar to that of a BMTC recruit in the same parade.

So much for "We Were Soldiers", it just meant that we deserved to be unfairly treated being a NSman. Hahaha

I rather be born in Australia, or NZ, or Finland, or Norway.

Yours truly would like to share this quote:
"I freed a thousand slaves I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves." - Harriet Tubman

Yes, the ignorants are happier souls than the free and courageous. That's why most dread it.

You are philosophical. In real life, you either win or lose. In both situations, you accept the outcome like a true hero and even when you win, you continue to plough on.

Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

Couple Of Points:

1. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. ;)

2. That song from Beyond is a great song. :D

Typical sar-kars. Many PAP PLPs become instant sar-kars after receiving assistance from their MPees.

You and I are just the minority. There are still many siao-on sinkie soldiers around. One of them is eatshitndie.

correct. i'm extremely "on" during my saf stint. i stood upright looking straight with a 1000-yard stare with food pan by my side in 12 o'clock position while lining up for meals, and i charged up and down pengkang hill in sbo on quick time faster than all instructors and trainers. i also smooched my rifle everyday with a deep passionate kiss before returning it to the armory.
