Some 5,000 contraband cigarettes seized at Woodlands Checkpoint

SINGAPORE: Some 5,000 cartons of contraband cigarettes were seized at the Woodlands Checkpoint in the last two days.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the potential duty and GST involved amounted to some S$385,000.
Early on Monday morning, some 4,000 cartons were seized from a Malaysia-registered truck which was declared to be conveying a consignment of assorted second-hand trousers and shirts.
Just hours later, another 130 cartons were found hidden in various parts of a Malaysia-registered car.
And on Tuesday, close to 900 cartons of illegal cigarettes were seized from a Malaysia-registered truck declared to be carrying a consignment of blue empty drum barrels.
Five males, aged between 21 to 47 years old, were handed over to the Singapore Customs for investigation.
