Serious Solving MRT breakdown/disruption problems

I reckon MRT trains breakdown at peak hours due mainly to overloading of trains due to improper planning of population growth.

Why not follow the ERP or taxi system and impose surcharges during PEAK HOUR travel on MRT? The extra revenue gained would offset the cost expense of running trains with low ridership during off peak hours. Price sensitive commuters would choose other cheaper means of transportation and lessen the crowds at MRT stations during PEAK HOURS.

Commuters can choose other modes of transport like bicycles, e scooters, car pooling etc to arrive at their work places and take the crowds off MRT stations during Peak hours.

LTA, SMRT got to get down to identifying and solving the root cause of breakdowns. Imposing surcharges is just treating the symptom and not the cause. If negligence and poor maintenance are not solved, the breakdowns will not be solved but instead continue to increase.

So your proposal is at best a short term solution to the breakdown problem

What a stupid idea. And what would it cost to implement? Since as you say it was due to improperly planned population growth, the solution is very simple. All you have to do is segregate the platform area into queues. First priority goes to SIngaporeans, after all, we paid for the damn MRT system. U show your pink IC, u go straight to the head of the queque, and be the first on the train and sit anywhere you want. 90% of the train is reserved for singaporeans. Tourists who spend money here get 2nd priority, all other FT leeches go to the back of the line.

Tourists do not travel on MRT trains during PEAK HOURS! FT expats drive company cars or take taxis on company expense. FT construction workers travel to worksites on Company Lorries.

The problem still persists because the root cause of the problem (over-crowding) has not been dealt with. It requires a short term solution of limiting crowds by price factor to prevent excessive wear and tear and frequent breakdowns due to it. Controlling population growth by immigration is another long term fix.
In the mean time something drastic and painful has to be imposed.

excellent. The London tube is more than 100yrs old and many other mrts are much older. It is negligence and poor planning that are main causes of the breakdowns. Let us call a spade a spade and not allow pap to absolve themselves from the blame

for a fully electric system, much of the problems are related to, of course, the electrical system. there are trains running on dc current and trains running on ac current. with voltage spikes which happen frequently or sporadically in any aging system depending on the quality, amount and frequency of maintenance ac-equipped trains are easier to repair as typically blown fuses can be cheaply and quickly replaced. not so for a dc-equipped train. thyristors will need to be replaced, and they are not readily available as spares or cheap to stock up. due to shortages, trains will remain in the yard in longer durations waiting for parts to arrive.



the other problem is the signaling system which relies on the electrical power system. the component with lowest mtbf is typically the power amplifier, and it can cause chain reaction failures to trains either being overpowered or underpowered. it will need power control and a secondary failure detection mechanism. the longer term issues of insulators getting caked with dust, soot and residue which have conductive properties can easily be fixed with regular and more frequent inspection and maintenance, especially in the tropics. the hot, humid, rainy climate and accompanying corrosive index that sinkie transit systems operate in demand a more stringent approach to maintenance, repair, and replacement. that they operate relatively well in overall stats on the equatorial belt should not be taken for granted (name me another equivalent transit system on the equator that operates with better kpi and i will concede), yet they no doubt require constant improvements and upgrades to keep up.

I'm sure there are many reasons for the failure of the MRT system, including cronyism, corruption, incompetence, ...

How did someone like Ms. Saw ever become the CEO of SMRT? She didn't have any experience & when the old timers of SMRT started resigning why didn't anyone care or notice?

What are paper generals doing running a failing MRT system? If they were really serious at cleaning the system they could bring in "real" experts that have a proven track record.

This will never happen in modern Spore because LHL & Ho Ching are in charge.

Reduce the number of foreigners(including new citizens) living/working here and many of our main problems will be solved-rising local unemployment,train breakdowns due to overloading, long queue in public hospitals/clinics, lack of places for locals in universities, high cost of housing/water, return of TB ect2.

This problem started when the population was increased beyond what the system can cope. That DFS salesgirl aka Ho Ching's friend did nothing for maintenance over a long period of time. It will not magically go away just because less people are taking the trains.

There is a close correlation between the trains breaking down especially during PEAK HOURS when crowds are taking the MRT. It seldom breaksdown during OFF PEAK hours. This alone suggests that it is mainly a loading factor that cannot cope.

Start diverting human traffic away from MRT during peak hours until maintenance and the system can cope. Other countries like JAPAN can cope with huge traffic because the system has stabilised to a stagnating population. Singapore's population is artificially growing annually that the MRT system CANNOT COPE fast enough hence a short term solution of controlling human traffic is urgently needed short of sending back FT (PMET) workers.
