Bachelor Fairuz Arbain invited two young girls to a game of hide-and-seek and little did the younger one know that she was about to fall prey to a sexual predator.

Yesterday, the unemployed 32-year-old was sentenced to 10 years' jail and three strokes of the cane after admitting in court that he sodomised the six-year-old girl when he asked the victim and her eight-year-old playmate to play hide-and-seek.

The incident was said to have been committed at a home in Taman University at about 3.15pm on Jan 31.

Fairuz was charged under Section 377A of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping.

In mitigation, Azrul Sani, who represented the accused, pleaded for a light sentence, as Fairuz was sorry for his actions and was still single.

DPP Jasmee Hameeza Jaafar, however, called on the court to give an appropriate sentence as the accused's actions were inhumane and he had used the victim to satisfy his sexual urge.

Meanwhile, in a separate court, a Singaporean man was sentenced to a total of 10 years' jail and six strokes of the cane for possessing a gun, bullets and entering the country illegally.

Syed Farid Alwi Aljunied, 44, pleaded guilty to all three charges.

Sessions court judge Hassan Abdul Ghani sentenced Syed to five years jail and six strokes of the cane for the first offence of possessing a gun, four years jail for the second offence for possessing bullets and a year in jail for entering the country without a pass.

He ordered for the sentences to run concurrently from the date of arrest.

DPP was Mahadi Abdul Jumaat while the accused was not represented.
