SINGAPORE — About 17,750 workers in six job roles in the aerospace and aviation sector will benefit from a progressive wage model, a new tripartite committee set up for the sector said today (May 7).
These six jobs include key jobs in the sector such as baggage handlers, equipment operators and trolley retrievers. Also included in the list are passenger service agents, aircraft technicians and licensed aircraft engineers.
Workers in these jobs will benefit from a structured training pathway and clear career progression, the committee said.
The new committee, called the Aviation Sectoral Tripartite Committee, comprises 20 employers who collectively hire more than half the sector’s workforce.
It started work a year before it was formalised today and will target 60,000 workers in the sector.
In his welcome address at the committee’s launch at Changi Airport, committee Co-Chairman Lim Kuang Beng said the aerospace and aviation industry faces a manpower shortage due to Singapore’s low unemployment rate, the reduction in foreign worker quotas and an ageing workforce.
“Given the challenges ahead, there has to be concerted efforts from all stakeholders to attract new entrants into the industry, improve efficiency and enhance service levels to retain Singapore’s position as the leading air hub,” said Mr Lim.
