Bad news this morning. The Court of Appeal, Singapore’s highest court since we abolished appeals to Britain’s Privy Council, has ruled that Section 377A of the Penal Code is not unconstitutional. Section 377A criminalises sex between men, and is the key piece of legislation that justifies a plethora of other rules and regulations that discriminate against gay people.

I haven’t had time to read the 100-page judgement — thus a short post today — but snippets reported in the press this morning, such as this below, suggest that it is going to be a screamer, crying out for....

This is the slippery slope argument used by homophobes & Christian fundies: legalize gay sex → legalize gay marriage → legalize gay family.

As nonsensical as saying that legalizing cigarettes will lead to legalizing marijuana to legalizing heroin. 2 points the ignoramuses here should note:

1. Section 377A is unconstitutional because it discriminates against a group of S'poreans for their sexual orientation and practice.
2. Ass-fucking is an entrenched reality; it's practised by hundreds of thousands of Sinkies including some ministers and their offspring (Li Hongyi is gay). To have a law that criminalizes but does not enforce the prosecution of gay sex is bad law; it brings the penal code into disrepute and sets a bad precedence.

Just so, legalizing gay sex ≠ legalizing gay marriage. The constitution is very clear on what constitutes marriage: civil union between a man and a woman. Two men or women may have sex with each other, but they can't marry.
