SINGAPORE: Following a massive disruption to the North-South and East-West MRT lines on Tuesday evening (Jul 7) that affected 250,000 commuters during evening peak hours, SMRT has announced measures to prevent a repeat of the incident.

SMRT had said the disruption was due to multiple power trips detected on both lines. It has ruled out a defective train as the cause of the power fault. The root cause of the breakdown has yet to be identified.

The transport operator on Friday said it will reschedule long-term track upgrade and renewal programmes as necessary, so that priority for track access during limited maintenance hours at night can be given to immediate remedial actions that can safeguard the system.

SMRT said it will continue testing and investigations through the weekend by repeating the full cycle of checks and re-enacting where possible, conditions under which there was a series of power trips on Tuesday.

It is also working with external experts to review the robustness of the power network, and will find ways to segement it further in order to avoid a similar system-wide power failure.

"We have also brought in a number of retired SMRT staff with experience in network power issues to assist in investigations. At the same time, we have advanced the procurement of additional conditioning monitoring systems that were being developed jointly with R&D agencies," SMRT said.

SMRT could have avoided plenty of criticism had it revealed that the breakdown was part of the SG50 celebrations, or a anti-terrorism drill. Lui Tuck Yew would not have to wake up so early to do standing parade at AMK MRT station. :D

The sinkapore mrt system was old infrastructure designed to serve conditions of a 3.5 million population back in the 1980s.if PAP appoints me as transport minister.I promise to take Singapore the next leap forward into the future,by employing technologies that are proven and cutting age by countries such as India and germany that transported over 6 million jews to their destination promptly and

These guys are really clowns.
Why bother to enact?
It will happen again. Soon!
Clown Desperate Quack has already said that they "will not be able to catch every potential fault even if SMRT stepped up maintenance."

If you don't know the cause of the problem, how would external consultants know anything???

This is an excuse to cover their asses next time - so when the next power failure occurs, they will tell you that it was due to an re-enactment.

You obviously do not know how the devious minds of our civil servants.

If people ask the cause or if it happens again, they can shift the responsibility to these "external consultants". However if a solution is found they will take all the credit & bonuses ;)

What you mean they are going to renact the conditions that caused the breakdown? Are they renacting the appointment of Desmond Quack?

Spot on. Always the case in the civil service. They have developed this into a science.

I suspect the (Made in China) train herself was the root cause of the power trip.
1st report just after the 7-July breakdown stated the problem by the train.
I think they try to salvage face(s) of approving to use China-make trains as problematic.
Nowadays we do not see many London cabs on street; they were made in China.
