SMRT to be more 'pro-active' in $900m programme

The SMRT's $900 million programme to upgrade a slew of infrastructural and systems components on the North-South and East-West lines will cover three areas: a change in the signalling system, a change in the pneumatic system and improvement on the propulsion system and replacing the rail sleepers.

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew gave details of this on Wednesday morning when he visited the SMRT Bishan depot.

He told reporters that SMRT is taking a more 'pro-active stance', putting more emphasis on replacement, rather than repair.

This won't have happened if at the 1st place they used part of their yearly profit to maintain the infrastructure instead of handing all to the shareholders. Same thing happened when they decided to buy new taxis. They used the "upgrade" as an excuse to increase the fares
In a free economy biznesses would have to set aside a portion of profits for future investment like new cars. While in Spore these GLCs have a monopoly simply pass all costs for upgrades to consumers. It's no wonder the GLCs can only succeed in Spore & no where else
