SM Goh leaks out his four fighting MPs

SM Goh endorses first-term MPs in his team
He says the 4 have done well and will likely be fielded in next election; SM will run again
By Cai Haoxiang

SENIOR Minister Goh Chok Tong has endorsed the four first-term MPs in his Marine Parade team, saying that their work is up to the mark and that they will likely be fielded again in the next general election, due by February next year.

Mr Goh, 69, the anchor minister for Marine Parade GRC, made the comment during a hongbao and gift distribution event at Block 17A, Marine Terrace yesterday.

Replying to reporters on how he assessed the first-term MPs under his charge, he said: 'They have done well, and there's no reason as far as I'm concerned for them to be taken out. So they'll be fielded, of course.'

The four Marine Parade MPs who first entered politics in 2006 are Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, 42, Dr Fatimah Lateef, 44, Mr Seah Kian Peng, 49 and Mr Lim Biow Chuan, 47.

Reacting to Mr Goh's remarks, Mr Seah said: 'I am gratified. Mr Goh's endorsement is certainly reassuring and motivating. All of us first-term MPs have put in a lot of effort to know the ground well.

'But the more important thing is how our residents feel towards us. I think the majority would recognise what we've done for them, but you can't please everyone.'

Mr Goh, who is into his eighth term, told reporters yesterday that he will contest again in the GRC. The other MP in the six-member GRC is Dr Ong Seh Hong, 48, who is into his second term.

Yesterday, 51 needy residents in Marine Parade each received from Mr Goh $100 in cash and a trolley of food items like oats, instant noodles, biscuits and pineapple tarts. The residents are on the Public Assistance Scheme, unable to work due to old age, illness or unfavourable family circumstances.

One of the recipients was Mr Tan Jeng Chin, 60, who could not work after he suffered a stroke 20 years ago. He said: 'As long as I can eat a meal a day, it is good enough.'

Ms Irene van der Beek, 82, said: 'I will use the money to help look after my 81-year-old sister, who is not mobile and has multiple health issues.'

After distributing the handouts, Mr Goh went on a 11/2 hour walkabout, which took in two kindergartens, a multi-storey carpark, a family service centre and the hawker centre at Block 50A, to see how the estate could be more friendly to the elderly.

He also inspected the new route for bus service 76, which will make three new stops along Marine Crescent and Marine Terrace from Jan 30 for the benefit of the elderly residents.

He was accompanied by Mr Lim, grassroots leaders and government representatives.

Mr Goh conducts walkabouts in Marine Parade every few months to inspect estate facilities and interact with residents, said the People's Action Party branch secretary for Marine Parade, Mr Yusof Lateef. Mr Goh's last walkabout was in September.

4.blah, blah and more blahs.

It is not for him to say. Got notice over the years almost always he say something, the next few days the other two will say something else and not give him face? I think he should learn to keep quiet.
