SingPost worker stole new credit cards in mail

A SingPost employee who stole envelopes containing newly issued credit cards was jailed for nearly three years yesterday.

Andy Soh Wei Keong, 24, would hand most of the stolen cards to an accomplice, who used them to buy Rolex watches.

Soh then sold the luxury watches for up to $22,200 and they split the proceeds equally.

But police were alerted after they received 10 reports from different people saying their new credit cards had been used in suspected fraud cases before they had even arrived in the post.

Yesterday, Soh received the 33-month sentence after pleading guilty to nine charges, including theft and cheating.

Senior District Judge Liew Thiam Leng took 18 other charges into consideration.

He said Soh had abused his position by stealing the cards.

The court heard Soh worked in SingPost’s mail processing department.

He met his accomplice, Toh Xie Guang, in July last year and told him his work in SingPost involved handling mail containing credit cards.

He told Toh, 30, that he would be able to steal the letters containing the credit cards from his workplace and hand the cards to him.

They agreed on the plan to use the credit cards to buy Rolexes.

Soh stole 11 cards which were used to buy 10 watches.

Most of the timepieces were bought by Toh, but Soh also purchased some himself.

Defence lawyer Mathew Kurian said Soh had financial problems, on top of which his partner at that time – who is now his wife – was pregnant.

He said it was Toh who suggested that he steal the credit cards so he could start a food business. Toh even promised to help him set up the business, said Mr Kurian. But after committing the offences, he fled to Vietnam.

Soh stayed behind and was arrested in November last year.

He has been sacked by SingPost.

His sentence was deferred until Monday so he can spend time with his wife, who turns 21 tomorrow.

Toh is now serving 28 months in jail for his role in the offences.
