Number of Singaporean visitors to Malaysia hits record low despite weak ringgit

Arrivals dropped 7% last year.

The weak ringgit was not enough to draw more Singaporeans over the Causeway last year.

Statistics from Tourism Malaysia show that the number of Singaporean tourists who visited the country dropped to 12.39 million in 2015, 7% less than the 13.93 million tourists who visited the country in 2014.

This is also the lowest number of visits from Singapore nationals on record.

The ringgit lost over 20% of its value against the Singapore dollar in 2015, dragged by Malaysia's escalating economic woes.

From mid-July, Malaysia will begin charging an RM20 (S$6.70) fee on Singapore-registered cars and foreign vehicles entering Johor under its Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system, the New Straits Times newspaper reported on Wednesday (June 8).

Will be the death knell for small businesses in JB... most already suffering.
Crime will surely increase as a lot of locals will be struggling.

Despite the weaker ringgit, the implementation of the GST has made things expensive in Malaysia.

I was told that the Ramadan festive mood is very subdued in malaysia this year, maybe still early.
But indonesia is roaring!

Not surprising about Malaysia when you consider all the problems they are having: The GST + devaluation of the ringgit + the political problems

Johorians will camp and ambush around causeway, together with mata.
Sultan so many posh cars, stay huge villa, many wives but the people still worship them. Hahaa:D

Robber will become a job.

I am always surprised that there are Sporeans who go to Malaysia with their Mercedes & Rolex watches. They flash their cash around attracting too much attention to themselves.

If you are a smart thief you would prey on the wealthy instead of the poor. So many desperados go to JB to look out for Spore victims.

Toyota has sinked 2billion into Malaysia . weak Currency is good for MNC

feels more economical now to fly to KL instead of driving up.

Things in JB ain't cheap. One packet of noodle cost you RM7. That's expensive.

People forget that JB is the most expenive place in Malaysia because it is next door to Spore.
Despite this I will still go because it is still cheaper than Spore & I still get a kick from being out of Spore.

However I am reducing the frequency because all that rich food is not healthy when you get on in years :o

Agree... I believe it's more of the fact that Singaporeans has more choices to travel to....with the strong Sing dollar...... Japan, US, Europe Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and next time even Myanmar etc.....are pretty good places to go to, with the advent of budget airlines.

Would not make sense to drive into JB with the headache of the traffic situations and sometime hassle by the JPJ etc.....

While I am not sure on the showing off, even to places like Bintan or Bali, offers better experience....

Yes don't forget that Johoreans especially hate Sporeans. Not I say one but their own people said so.
