Xenophobia forum deadlock
Panellists unable to reach consensus on opposing anti-immigrant sentiments

SINGAPORE - Panellists, including several prominent bloggers, at a recent forum on xenophobia here were unable to reach a consensus on whether they should take a collective stand against such behaviour online.

The gridlock led one of the participants, Mr Alex Au, who runs the Yawning Bread blog, to remark: "I find it very strange that we're going to even leave open the door that we can be pro-xenophobia.

"It's almost like saying we can talk about racism but never establish a stand that racism is bad."

The two-hour forum, titled Online|Offline: Digital Citizens on Xenophobia, was held last Sunday.

A recording of it will be uploaded on YouTube today as the first of a series of chat shows on national issues - an initiative by four bloggers, Mr Andrew Loh, Mr Au, Mr Martyn See and Mr Ravi Philemon. The bloggers said they were concerned about the increasing amount of anti-immigrant sentiments in recent years.

At the inaugural forum, Chua Chu Kang Group Representation Constituency Member of Parliament Zaqy Mohamad was also a panellist.

From the start, the panellists could not agree on the definition of xenophobia. The definitions offered by the panellists included "irrational dislike of foreigners" and "unreasonable hatred of foreigners".

Prior to Mr Au's comments during the forum, Mr See said it was meant "to start an honest discussion about anti-foreigner sentiments", while Mr Loh felt that it is "just a discussion on the issues" and "not an anti-xenophobia movement".

Speaking to TODAY, National University of Singapore sociologist Tan Ern Ser said that xenophobia "boils down to being fearful of or being anti-foreigner".

Associate Professor Tan said the bloggers could, for instance, have used a 10-point scale to assess xenophobia, which can be seen as "a matter of different degrees of being fearful", rather than just between being "anti-foreigner and not being anti-foreigner".

He added: "I reckon a minority of Singaporeans (at least many of those who use the social media frequently) come across as quite high - maybe an eight, while a large majority of Singaporeans would probably score a three or a four," said Assoc Prof Tan.

During the forum, the panellists also discussed reasons for anti-foreigner sentiments. They ranged from the lack of avenues to speak out - resulting in irrational venting online - to the readiness to classify people in a "race-conscious society". [Huh? Now add racism in the pot?]

While Mr Zaqy agreed that there is some fear over the influx of foreigners, he reiterated that there have been policy changes, particularly with regards to the tightening of foreign workers.

He pointed out, however, that going by his experience, older Singaporeans are still very race-conscious.

To curb rising xenophobia, the panellists suggested conducting a national dialogue on population and labour force.

Among other things, they also called for the "delegitimisation" of identifying people by their ethnicity and national origin and a re-examination of the economic growth model to achieve growth without having to constantly increase the population.

To sum up why Sinkies hate foreigners:

PRCs = lying, cheating, lowly educated and uncouth. men are typically loud mouthed laborers, while women are commonly working as ktv gals or masseurs. PRC students also occupies many slots at local unis and take free scholarships paid by locals.

Pinoys = can speak half-past six English but pretend to be highly educated. Fills up jobs that can be taken by Sinkies, but at a lower wage (e.g. customer service).

Indians = smell bad typically with their coconut oil fragrance. The lower rungs of Indians are lecherous and always stare at women. The higher educated level of Indians typically take up I.T jobs here at wage level of around 30-50% lower than a local.

SBF should have sent one representative. Then they would surely grasp the real issue.

SGs are not xenophobic. Xenophobia is a label used by the FAP Traitors to brush off and smearing of SGs' resistance against their unbelievably daring treachery against and betrayal of SGs. In functional countries, the FAP Traitors would have been swiftly overthrown and brought to justice for treason. In SG, they still have the amazing support of 60% gong kias - the result of 50 years of very successful brainwashing by one Old Dud and his 154th state media. The 'xenophobia problem' will be quickly solved the day when the FAP Traitors are evicted from power.

Shucks ! You should have sat on the panel.

Agreed. Labeling people xenophobic is a PAP ploy to demonise those who are speaking up against the govt's uncontrolled ill-devised immigration policy. By casting them as anti-national elements, the PAP govt sought to isolate the vocal ones and so override popular resistance and sentiments.

Indeed, if the situation 'gets out of hand', expect the FAP to use the ISA against SGs to 'protect' foreigners. That is if the pro-Foreigner K Court and Poodle Force are still insufficient to cow SGs into submitting to Foreigners.

Maybe those folks on the panel are feigning ignorance of the real problem.

When you think about who/which organization is hosting the session, it begins to make sense.

Couple of comments on this hilarious session. Please watch the video when you guys have the chance.

1. Martyn See is not particularly bright. No one holds a dishonest discussion on anything. I them recalled how he endorsed our very own Robert Ho after interviewing him - talk about blur.
2. They seem to struggle from the very start - xenophobia/racism and vice versa.
3. They should have discussed the issue of FT resentment by the locals and how bad and why rather than pick an abstract word and start tripping over its definition.
4. Seemed like a shiok sendiri session.

Zaqy's comments were quite startling.

All these fuckers fail english all the time always accusing others with better TOEL, TOEIC, GMAT, GRE scores and high postgraduate degrees gotten from world class unis from the front door of taking them out of context. The question is why is there a dislike for foreigners. Skip the word xenophobia better used in Japan or Germany.

questions! how do you ascertain those folks don't visit and/or post in this forum? :p:p:p

Walao eh! They never read the thread I started called "Useful and Useless Foreigners".

LOl couldnt agree with you more on your points....BUT who said that the PAP were even genuine or sincere about their attempts to explore, discuss and seek to resolve the problem???

They sent their "trusty" Zaqy to go there and then everyone starts confusing the issue.... the discussion gets hijacked and polarising the panel with looking for definitions....

all this is so that finally they can say "look we tried but there was no satisfactory solution so LET'S MOVE ON..."

:)

TYPICAL....
