In Japan, ‘RRR’ opens as highest-grossing foreign film of the week, raking in over RM2m (VIDEO)

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 — Indian blockbuster RRR has finally arrived at Japanese cinemas and is currently making waves.
According to Variety, the SS Rajamouli film was released on 209 screens and 31 Imax screens across 44 cities and prefectures in Japan on October 21.
It was the widest release for an Indian film in the country.
In its opening week, RRR raked up 73 million yen (RM2.3 million), making it the highest first week collection for an Indian film in Japan.
The film currently ranks at number 10 at the Japanese box office, just ahead of other foreign films such as The Bad Guys, Spencer and Jurassic World Dominion.

The other top films were all local Japanese films.
The film’s stars, Ram Charan and NTR Jr along with director Rajamouli have also done a promotional tour for the film in Japan.
The 1995 film Muthu starring superstar Rajinikanth remains the highest-grossing Indian film of all time in Japan, with a box office collection of 400 million yen (RM12.7 million).
Muthu was released in 1998 on limited screens in arthouse cinemas across Japan.
The second highest-grossing Indian film in Japan goes to Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion which raked in 300 million yen (RM9.5 million) in box office.
According to Twin, which released the film in Japan, Rajamouli has a dedicated fan base in Japan since his success with Baahubali 2.
"Director Rajamouli is one of the most anticipated directors and has a solid fan base in Japan because Baahubali 2 ran for a year in 2017.
"Also, the Japanese theatrical market is getting back to normal, and audiences anticipate having an exciting cinema experience like RRR.
"Japanese audiences find that Indian films, especially RRR, are completely different from the films they normally watch, and it has tremendous energy, which makes them feel refreshed,” Twin said.
Previously, RRR made an impressive worldwide run where it has grossed US$145 million (RM685 million), including US$14.5 million (RM68.5 million) collected in North America.
The film has also won 'The Best International Film' category at the 2022 Saturn Award.
